Civilization (series)

Civilization is a series of turn-based strategy video games, first released in 1991. Sid Meier developed the first game in the series and has had creative input for most of the rest, and his name is usually included in the formal title of these games, such as Sid Meier's Civilization. There are six main games in the series, a number of expansion packs and spin-off games, as well as board games inspired by the video game series. The series is considered a formulative example of the 4X genre, in which players achieve victory through four routes: "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate".

Difficulties

Settler (1)

• The easiest difficulty level and a great way to start your very first game or when you want to try a new strategy. As a Settler leader, you will notice that: barbarians and wild animals are less aggressive, your citizens stay happy and healthy longer, and there are many production bonuses to help you.

Chieftain (2)

• A relatively easy difficulty level - good for when you want to try a new strategy. Barbarians and wild animals are stronger and more aggressive and you don't get as many bonuses.

Warlord (3)

• Warlords have a slightly tougher time of it. Your opponents are less forgiving and more aggressive - watch your back!

Noble (4)

• Nobles need to balance their many responsibilities, so this is the most balanced level. Civ veterans will find this level to be a great place to start.

Prince (5)

• As a Prince you will need to truly prove you are of royal stock. The AI can produce and research slightly faster than you so you will have to play a much better game to be victorious.

Monarch (6)

• For Monarchs, the challenges definitely start to ramp up on this level. Upkeep is higher, research is slower, your people are harder to please, and your computer opponents are just plain smarter.

Emperor (7)

• Are you ready to be an Emperor? If so, you will need to prove your mettle by overcoming opponents that are both fast and aggressive while dealing with a population that is harder to motivate and please. This is a true test for Civ experts.

Immortal (8)

• Only a few can claim memberships among the ranks of the Immortals. This is a bruising test for all but the most experienced.

Deity (9)

• The ultimate test for only the best Civ players. Can it be beat?
• Muuuhahaha! Good luck, sucker!

Map Sizes

Duel

• A very tiny map with only one opponent. This is tougher than it sounds because you will have to work extra hard at research without the benefit of multiple trading partners.

Tiny

• A very small map with two opponents. Expect to find other Civs rather quickly and for Conquest games to go more quickly.

Small

• A slightly larger map sized to have 4 opponents for you.

Standard

• This map size is the default choice and is designed to have 7 total Civs. There's a lot of opportunity for exploration but you shouldn't feel alone for very long.

Large

• For people who want to have some extra room to spread out and explore. This map size will support 9 Civs comfortably.

Huge

• If you are looking for a truly epic experience, this map size is for you. It has room for you and 10 opponents.

• SimCity inspired Civilization in a way. The first prototype of Civilization that I did was a real-time game like SimCity, in that you placed cities and moved things around, but cities grew without you. You basically seeded the world in a kind of SimCity-esque way. Instead of zoning, you seeded things, and you said I want a city over there, and why don't you do some farming over here. What I didn't like in that version of Civilization is that you did a lot more watching than you did playing. So SimCity, Empire, Railroad Tycoon, and the Civilization board game were the different ingredients that we stirred together to get to Civilization.
