Summary

Description
English: 'X' marks the spot I don't know who painted this mark and put a stud on this bridleway bridge carrying the Monarch's Way over the M54 motorway. I found another of these a mile away near the canal in Ball Lane, Coven. I am told that these mystery crosses are survey control stations (studs or nails, etc) that have been precisely co-ordinated in terms of the OS National Grid. They are highlighted with a white cross so that they can be precisely identified on vertical aerial photographs to be used for mapping purposes, usually at 1:500 scale in connection with a proposed road project. This is called photogrammetric mapping.
