Colorized image of Iapetus taken by Cassini on 31 December 2004. A number of narrow angle raw images were assembled into a black & white mosaic and then colorized using a lower resolution wide angle color image. Mosaic assembled by Gordan Ugarkovic.
The images were taken near Cassini's closest approach to Iapetus, with a phase angle (Sun-Iapetus-spacecraft) of around 90 degrees. Visible is the dark, brownish material covering much of the visible surface here and bright snow to Iapetus' north. The tall equatorial mountain range is rotating out of view, towards the bottom of the image. Also visible are a couple of huge impact basins, a testimony to a violent history of this moon.
