Notes Peinture d'allure modeste par son format et sa facture comme esquissée, ce tableau se singularise par son sujet : un autoportrait de dos. Rares sont en effet les peintres ayant délibérément choisi de dissimuler leur visage et donc une apparence physiologique passagère. La silhouette efflanquée et voûtée ainsi qu'une barbe blanche trahissent toutefois l'âge avancé de l'artiste. Ce dernier révèle ici sa conception de la peinture :le paysage d'après nature réalisé directement sur le motif
