    Vrijdag 13 augustus om 13.00 uur krijgen de orang oetans in Ouwehands Dierenpark Rhenen turnles van topturner Epke Zonderland. De orang oetans hebben sinds kort een vernieuwd verblijf en zijn de fijne kneepjesvan het klim- en klautervak verleerd. Ze kunnen namelijk in het unieke buitenverblijf, boven de bezoekers, slingeren van boom tot boom.

    Om meer tegemoet te komen aan hun natuurlijke behoefte om te klimmen en te slingeren hebben deze mensapen bomen tot wel tien meter hoog gekregen: Apen op Stelten!Ingenieuze voederliften maken het voor de orang oetans nog leuker.


    Orang oetan (Pongo Pygmaeus) betekent in het Maleis bosmens. Het zijn dus echte klauteraars die bijna niet op de grond komen. Vanuit het Orihuis kunnen deze mensapen via één boom in een afgeschermd gebied naar boven klimmen. Vanuit die boom slingeren ze verder naar de andere zeven bomen. Deze zeven bomen bieden geen mogelijkheid naar beneden te gaan. Bezoekers kunnen dus gewoon onder de bomen door.


    Voederlift

    In zeven van de acht bomen is een voederlift geplaatst. Op voor de orang oetans onbekende tijdstippen brengt de lift een stuk fruit of iets anders lekkers naar boven. Hoog in de boom zit een luikje waar dat fruit uitgehaald kan worden. Het is een voor Nederland uniek systeem op het gebied van omgevingsverrijking. Orang oetans eten voornamelijk plantaardig voedsel zoals vruchten, noten, bladeren en boombarst. Soms voeden ze zich ook met eieren, insecten en vogels.
