[edit] Summary

Artist
Title
English: Vanity of Earthly Love
Date circa 1570
Medium oil on canvas
New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans; Gift of Mr. and Mrs Harris Masterson, 56.85
Notes
English: "This is another allegorical painting concerning the brevity of human life. The reclining nude contemplates a skull and a mirror while behind her is an older man who grasps a cupid and an hour glass [sic]. The allegorical interpretation is that Time carries Love away, leaving the woman to contemplate old age and death. The artist was particularly noted for modeling forms in candlelight.

Notice that the old man has what appear to be wings, suggesting that he is an angel. It is God, acting through his angel, who takes away youth. Notice that the skull is held in the left hand.

What is the object in her right hand? I would suggest it is a Christian Bible. God takes away youth, because that is a thing of the Earth. Death, in the left hand, is also not part of God's plan, which is represented by the right-hand."
