DescriptionSamuel Johnson - geograph.org.uk - 1073553.jpg
English: Samuel Johnson. Samuel Johnson was born in Lichfield on 7th September 1709 - but in 1752 Britain changed from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar with the "loss" of 11 days, so that his birthday is now reckoned as 18th September. He died on the 13th December 1784 having achieved much, most notably his famous Dictionary and was accorded a burial in Westminster Abbey in recognition of his achievements. This statue of him under an array of twinkling Christmas lights - looking rather glum I have to say - is to be found opposite 1073563 - though he seems to be averting his eyes from actually looking at his erstwhile home. Dr. Johnson was a great wit and made up many pithy sayings, a good number of which are still often quoted - such lines as "Sir, when a man is tired of Geograph, he is tired of Life !" - well something like that anyway.
