Journey is an American rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1973 by former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. The band has gone through several phases; its strongest commercial success occurred between 1978 and 1987 (with lead singer Steve Perry), after which it temporarily disbanded. Journey enjoyed a successful reunion in the mid-1990s, and later regrouped with a series of lead singers.

Quotes[edit]

All lyrics by Jonathan Cain, Steve Perry and Neal Schon, except as noted.

1970s[edit]

Infinity (1978)[edit]

  • When the lights go down in the city
And the sun shines on the bay,
Do I wanna be there in my city?
    • "Lights", written by Steve Perry and Neal Schon
  • Opened my eyes to a new kind of way,
All the good times that you saved.
    Are you feeling,
    You feeling that way too?
    Or am I just,
    Am I just a fool?
  • Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin'.
    I don't know where I'll be tomorrow.
Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin'.

Evolution (1979)[edit]

  • Lovin', touchin', squeezin' each other
When I'm alone all by myself,
    You're out with someone else
    Lovin', touchin', squeezin' each other.
    • "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'", written by Steve Perry

1980s[edit]

  • Only the young can say
    They're free to fly away,
    Sharing the same desires,
    Burnin' like wildfire.

    They're seein' through the promises
And all the lies they dare to tell.
    Is it heaven or hell?
    They know very well.

Departure (1980)[edit]

  • Any way you want it
That's the way you need it.
    Any way you want it.
    She loves to laugh,
    She loves to sing,
    She does everything.
    She loves to move,
    She loves to groove,
    She loves the lovin' things.
    Ooh, all night, all night,
    Oh, every night.

Escape (1981)[edit]

  • Just a small town girl
    Livin' in a lonely world.
    She took the midnight train
    Goin' anywhere.
    Just a city boy,
Born and raised in South Detroit.
    He took the midnight train
    Goin' anywhere.

A singer in a smokey room,
A smell of wine and cheap perfume.
For a smile they can share the night,
It goes on and on and on and on.

  • Strangers waiting
    Up and down the boulevard.
    Their shadows searching
    In the night.
    Streetlights, people
    Livin' just to find emotion
    Hidin', somewhere in the night.
    • "Don't Stop Believin'"
  • Workin' hard to get my fill,
    Everybody wants a thrill.
Payin' anything to roll the dice
    Just one more time.
    Some will win,
    Some will lose,
Some were born to sing the blues.
    Oh, the movie never ends,
It goes on and on and on and on.
    • "Don't Stop Believin'"
  • Don't stop believin'
    Hold on to that feelin'.
    • "Don't Stop Believin'"
  • Those summer nights are callin',
    Stone in love.
    Can't help myself I'm fallin'
    Stone in love.
    • "Stone in Love"
  • It's been a mystery,
But still they try to see
    Why something good
    Can hurt so bad.

    Caught on a one-way street,
    The taste of bittersweet
Love will survive somehow, some way.

    One love feeds the fire,
    One heart burns desire.
    Wonder who's cryin' now.

  • Lying beside you here in the dark,
Feeling your heart beat with mine.
Softly you whisper, you're so sincere,
How could our love be so blind?

    We sailed on together,
    We drifted apart.
And here you are by my side.

So now I come to you with open arms
Nothing to hide, believe what I say.
So here I am with open arms
Hoping you'll see what your love means to me, open arms.

    • "Open Arms", written by Jonathan Cain and Steve Perry

Frontiers (1983)[edit]

  • Here we stand
    Worlds apart.
Hearts broken in two, two, two.
    Sleepless nights,
    Losing ground.
I'm reaching for you, you, you.

    Feelin' that it's gone.
    Can't change your mind.
    If we can't go on
    To survive the tide.
    Love divides.

  • It's been so long, since I've seen her face.
    You say she's doin' fine.
I still recall a sad cafe.
How it hurt so bad to see her cry.
    I didn't wanna say goodbye.

Send her my love, memories remain.
Send her my love, roses never fade.
    Send her my love.

  • Should have told you then I knew,
    Should have told you right
    From the start.
    But the words
    Didn't come out right.
    So I'll tell you
    Straight from my heart.
  • Highway run into the midnight sun
Wheels go 'round and 'round, you're on my mind.
    Restless hearts sleep alone tonight,
Sendin' all my love along the wire.

They say that the road ain't no place to start a family.
Right down the line it's been you and me.
And lovin' a music man ain't always what it's supposed to be.
Oh, girl you stand by me, I'm forever yours, faithfully.

Raised on Radio (1986)[edit]

  • The girl can't help it, she needs more.
He hasn't found what he's lookin' for.
They're still standing in the rain.
He can't help it, and she's just that way.
    And when he calls her,
She tells him that she still cares.
    Under the moonlight,
He wonders why she can't be there...why.
Why do they go on alone
    When they're missin' each other?
  • Be good to yourself when, nobody else will.
    Oh be good to yourself.
You're walkin' a high wire, caught in a cross fire.
    Oh be good to yourself
When you can't give no more.
They want it all but you gotta say no.
  • I've been thinking 'bout the times you walked out on me.
There were moments I'd believe, you were there.
Do I miss you, or am I lying to myself again?
I do these things (it's all because of you).
I keep holding on, but I'll try (try not to think of you).
    Love don't leave me lonely.

1990s[edit]

Trial by Fire (1996)[edit]

  • In my life I see where I've been,
I said that I'd never fall again.
    Within myself I was wrong.
    My searchin' ain't over... over
    I know that.

    When you love a woman,
You see your world inside her eyes.
    When you love a woman,
You know she's standin' by your side.
    A joy that lasts forever.
There's a band of gold that shines waiting
    Somewhere... oh oh yeah.
