[edit] 200 Sayings of Imam Ali from Nahjul Balagah (Peak of Eloquence)

I am aware of several sites on the internet where this collection of sayings have been posted as being taken from : Peak of Eloquence: Nahjul Balagha : Sermons and Letters of Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib as translated by Askari Jafri, Eleventh Revised Edition - Islamic Seminary Publications ISBN 0-941724-18-2 and I am not aware of the copyright status of this work. If it is not in the public domain so extensive an extraction would not be appropriate for posting here. Even if it is in the public domain a less extensive selection of the sayings might be preferable to give an introduction to the expressions of Ali. I will not immediately remove anything, but I definitely feel that more information on the copyright status of this translation will be required, or an extensive editing and paring down of what has been provided will be appropriate. I will add links to some of the sources to the expressions of Ali of which I am aware. ~ Kalki 13:17, 20 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Well, the original Arabic collection is nearly 1400 years old. The english translation however may be copyrighted, but there are alternate sources available online for reading. Heck, if any Shias are on this site, I'm sure one can contribute their own interpretation of it. ~ mr100percent 23:46, 8 Mar 2005 (EST)

Added note to top of subsection containing quotes from Nahjul Balagha. It may not appear so, but I've tried to make it as fair as possible. What isn't fair is for simple-minded Muslims or curious non-Muslims to visit this page and assume that the attributed quotes present an accurate portrayal of this individual. That notion is disputed. ~ Ashu8845

Even if this material isn't copyrighted, it shouldn't include a complete collection of anything — that is the province of Wikisource. Is this a complete list of sayings? ~ Jeff Q (talk) 16:17, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

This list of quotes does not translate the word "Allah" into "God" as it should. Allah is not the Muslim word for God, it is the ARABIC word for God and it is incorrect to use it while speaking English, just as it is incorrect to use the word "Dieu" unless speaking French. It is misleading to use the word "Allah" while speaking English, as it implies there is a difference between God and Allah, which there is not.

[edit] Authenticity of Nahjul Balaqha

The bad point is, can we REALLY consider those quotes that are in Nahjul Balagha from Ali? The book was collected 700 years after his death. In fact only Shi'a just believe those are from Ali. we have no historical evidence that they really are. I think we should at least mention this in the page, or unless it would be against neutrality of the site. Ali Nazifpour 10:03, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

I have to brief that: 1) The Book “Nahjul Balagah” or “Peak of Eloquence” is not an invention but Sibte Razi gathered into a Book “The Sermons and Sayings of Ali s/o Abi Talib” around late 4th Century Hijri.

2) Sibte Razi expired around 5th Century Hijri and he was well known personality of his time in Bagdad, when Bagdad was the Capital of Abbasid Kings as well as it was packed with Learnt and Scholars and also regarded as Centre of Culture and Knowledge. Students of History may find out more about Sibte Razi.

3) In the Book at certain places blank pages were left intentionally for collecting Sermons at a later time and some sermons are narrated with the comment that “This portion is also considered as a part of this Sermon”; by Sibte Razi. Scribe mistakes were also copied “as is where is” and more.

4) Comparison of comments/explanation of Sibte Razi, about some Text/Sentences placed at some places; with the Text give an idea about dissimilarity of speech.

5) Although Nahajul Balagah is more popular it is not the only collection of Speeches/Sermons or Saying of Ali ibn Abi Talib.

6) Shias accept/do-not-accept anything related to their Imam with/without thorough Investigation, and the Authenticity of Nahjul Balagah is undisputed amongst them from the very beginning.

7) And that the TEXT of the book speaks of itself and tells ‘to whom it is connected to’. I referred the ARABIC TEXT
