Talk:Free Gamer
Having read through the criteria, the only thing this possibly fails on is notability (certainly not copyright, given that Free Gamer is under the same license as Wikiquote). I will admit that Free Gamer is not the most well heard of thing in the world and its host would make it out to be just another blog. However, it grew into a well researched news source with multiple writers and staff, if only volunteer in nature, for free gaming. It exists in a niche market, and is unique in its coverage and commentary on free game development. Similar to new sources for other niches like amateur or indie gaming.
Again, it is mostly read by other niche markets like Linux or BSD users, but it is linked to on various Linux news sites and Linux gaming sites. Finding sources to that affect is difficult given the rather general and mundane name and thus all the non-related entries found during a Google search. However, basically it comes down to the fact that it is a unique site for a niche market. That does not make it inherently notable, but makes quotes from it useful.
However, should it be found to be thought of as too non-notable to other people I do have another suggestion. If Free Gamer is not notable in of itself, we could create a special page for general quotes from free software games. The Battle for Wesnoth and the classic NetHack are examples of free games that already have Wikiquate pages, but most of the notable free games (see Wikipedia) are unquoted on this site. Free games are not usually wordy so a single page for the genre would not be a bad idea.
The Free Gamer items could thus be on that page, given that Free Gamer is the main source of free game news and commentary (otherwise you only get the stray articles here and there from Linux and gaming new sources). This links to the mother article for free (in terms of code and levels and multimedia) and open source games (games where the source code at least is free) so you can see what I am talking about there. It would be a bit ugly having Free Gamer stuck in there with the game quotes, but if people disagree with its individual notability it is a compromise I am fine with. 208.114.133.133 23:04, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
I have found one or two specific links to Free Gamer and recommendations, nothing major but I felt I should post them here:
- http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/10-best-free-game-sites.htm (in the comments)
- http://www.webdatah.com/site/freegamer.blogspot.com/2010-01-26 (marks the popularity, rather than being a link)
None of these are all that special, but I found at least one of them accidentally. People don't write about useful sites like Free Gamer as much as people would write about free games themselves, and the links only show up randomly as people suggest it to people. I would also like to note, I have been trying to, and have largely succeeded, in finding sources for the Wikipedia "Open source video game" article, and on that Google search journey Free Gamer and related showed up more than once. None of this means concrete notability, but it is well worth considering for something as simple as a quote page. 208.114.133.133 21:45, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
Here is a good mention from the respected tech news source Slashdot!
