Carmen LI[edit]

I removed this entry, as the only sources I could find have alternate line divisions and do not include the phrase "Simul te aspexi..." but rather "Nam simul te Lesbia adspexi..." [1], [2], [3]

  • Simul te aspexi, nihil est super mi vocis in ore,
lingua sed torpet, tenuis sub artus flamma demanat,
sonitu suopte tintinant aures, gemina teguntur lumina nocte.
    • Directly when I see you, nothing is left from the voice in my mouth,
but my tongue is paralyzed, in my limbs flows a delicate flame,
By their own sound sing my ears, my eyes are being covered by a double night.

Perseus [4] reads thus:

  • Nam simul te,
Lesbia, adspexi, nihil est super mi
lingua sed torpet, tenuis sub artus
    flamma demanat, sonitu suopte
    tintinant aures, gemina teguntur
    lumina nocte

With English translation by Leonard C. Smithers [5] as:
"for the instant I glance on you, Lesbia, nothing is left to me [of voice], but my tongue is numbed, a keen-edged flame spreads through my limbs, with sound self-caused my twin ears sing, and my eyes are enwrapped with night.
