Naturally, these are quotations that appeal to me. I think we have to start mining our own instead of endlessly re-circulating ancient ones. For one thing, we need a lot more quotations from women, who say a lot of pithy things that get disregarded.

Iain Banks' use of language is remarkably good. I've avoided quoting snippets that are too small or passages that are too long. (I could easily have included a couple more introductory paragraphs to the Dependency Principle.)
