This phrase replaced the original line from Frank Readick the original voice of the Shadow when the character was the narrator of Detective Story Hour. It carried over to The Shadow for some episodes: "The weed of crime bears bitter fruit, crime does not pay! The Shadow knows (hahahahahaha)" before being replaced by this better known because used more often quote. First uttered by Orson Welles the first Lamont Cranston version of The Shadow.
