The Black Keys is an American rock band formed in Akron, Ohio, in 2001. The group consists of vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer/producer Patrick Carney. The group began as an independent act that the duo founded after dropping out of college, and eventually emerged in a second wave of popular garage rock revival artists from the 2000s.

Song lyrics[edit]

All lyrics written by Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, except as noted.

Thickfreakness (2003)[edit]

  • You hit the city, it swallow you whole;
You got no friends darlin', to satisfy your soul.
And then the sidewalk ends, lights all red,
You say to yourself, you're better off dead.
Hard row to hoe all by yourself.
    • Hard Row, written by Dan Auerbach and Chuck Auerbach
  • You hold on
    To love that's gone.
    Run a mile
    To see him smile.
    But you don't know
    He's door to door,
    Playin' you
    For the fool.

    Let him go;
    Walk out your door.
    And come to me,
    I'm gonna set you free.

Rubber Factory (2004)[edit]

  • What about the night,
    Makes you change, yeah,
    Oh, from sweet,
    To deranged?
    What about my voice,
    Tells you who,
    Who's been wrong to you?
  • Girl is on my mind,
    Girl is on my mind,
    Try to ignore it,
    I try to unwind,
But she is on my mind.
  • Love me,
    Don't leave me,
Make me feel you need me,
    You kill me,
    Thrill me,
Don't you know that I will be,
    Callin' on you everyday,
    Till I get my way?

Magic Potion (2006)[edit]

  • Evil hides
    In dark places,
    But now I find it
    In familiar faces.
  • When I was thirteen,
    My mom said "Son,
    You're the one I adore."
    Now I'm old and wise,
    When I see your eyes,
    You're the one I adore.

Attack & Release (2008)[edit]

  • I was a movin' man in my younger days,
But I've grown out of my ramblin' ways.
I left that road so far behind,
    Now I know, oh baby.
    I got mine.
  • And baby when I roll
    I roll deep
    and some are told
    I couldn't get no sleep
    • I Got Mine
  • Kings and sons of God
Travel on their way from here,
    Calming restless mobs,
Easing all of their, all of their fear.

    Strange times are here.
    Strange times are here.

Brothers (2010)[edit]

  • I wanted love, I needed love,
Most of all, most of all.
Someone said true love was dead,
And I'm bound to fall, bound to fall
    For you.
    Oh, what can I do?
  • When I was young and moving fast
    Nothing slowed me down,
    Oh slowed me down.
    Now I let the others pass;
    I've come around,
    Oh come around
    'Cause I've found.

    Living just to keep going
    Going just to be sane
    All the while live knowing
    Such a shame.

    • Tighten Up
  • I must admit
    I can't explain
    Any of these thoughts racing
    Through my brain.

    It's true
    Baby I'm howlin' for you.

El Camino (2011)[edit]

  • Well I’m so above you
    And it’s plain to see
But I came to love you anyway.
So you tore my heart out.
    And I don’t mind bleeding
Any old time you keep me waiting
    Waiting, waiting.

Interviews[edit]

  • "The whole system right now with these majors is like, signing shit that has the most social media interaction, the most streaming... and I was like, you know what? When I was nine years old I bought Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" and I listened to that shit-- I'm not joking-- like, 250 times in a week. Like a fucking idiot. And like, that's who's listening to this shit that's getting a billion streams in a month. It's like, fucking nine year old morons."
    • Patrick Carney, The Joe Rogan Experience, September 2019
