CLU[edit]

  • Greetings, programs! Together we have achieved a great many things. We have created a vast, complex system. We've maintained it; we've improved it. We've rid it of its imperfection. Not to mention, rid it of the false deity who sought to enslave us! Kevin Flynn!! Where are you now?! My fellow programs, let there be no doubt that our world is a cage no more. For at this moment, the key to the next frontier is finally in our possession! And unlike our selfish creator, who reserved the privilege of our world only for himself, I will make their world open and available to all of us. YES, TO ALL OF US! And whatever we find there, there, our system will grow. There, our system will blossom! Do this, prove yourselves, prove yourselves to me, be loyal to me, and I will never betray you! - Maximize efficiency, rid the new system of its imperfection! My vision is clear, fellow programs. Out there is a new world! Out there is our victory! Out there... is our destiny.
  • Sam. Look at you man. Look at the size of you.
  • I'm not your father Sam. But I am very, very happy to see you.
  • I've been waiting a long time for this.
  • Game on, old friend.
  • You've been corrupted.

Jarvis[edit]

  • Greetings, programs! Oh, what an occasion we have here before us. Because your rumors are true. We do indeed have in our midst a User! A User. So, what to do? What does this User deserve? Might I suggest, perhaps, the challenge of the grid? [crowd cheers] And who best to battle this singular opponent? Perhaps one who has some experience in these matters. Oh yes indeed, programs! Your liberator! Your luminary! Your leader and beacon![1] The one who vanquished the tyranny of the user those many cycles before! CLU!
  1. The official subtitles say "leader and maker" but writer Adam Horowitz confirmed that "leader and beacon" is correct.

Rinzler[edit]

[Overcomes his reprogramming after seeing Flynn's face, becomes Tron again.]

  • [Last words, turning on CLU during LightJet battle] I fight—for the users!

Dialogue[edit]

Kevin Flynn: [Voice Over] The Grid. A digital frontier. I tried to picture clusters of information as they moved through the computer. What did they look like? Ships? Motorcycles? Were the circuits like freeways? I kept dreaming of a world I thought I'd never see. And then one day . . .
Young Sam Flynn: [Voice Over] You got in!
Kevin Flynn: [Voice Over] That's right, man. I got in.
[Tron: Legacy]

Kevin Flynn: We built a new grid for programs and users. Now, I couldn't be in there all the time, so I created a program in my own image that could think, like you and me. And I called him CLU.
Young Sam: Codified Likeness Utility.
Kevin Flynn: That's right. And CLU, Tron, and I, we built the system where all information was free and open. Beautiful. And then, one day, something happened. Something extraordinary. A miracle.
Young Sam: What was it?
Kevin Flynn: That'll have to wait til next time.

Kevin Flynn: What do you say tomorrow we go to the arcade, and you can have a crack at the old man's high score? First game's on me. [flips Sam a quarter]
Young Sam: Can we play doubles? On the same team?
Kevin Flynn: [turning to leave] We're always on the same team.

Alan Bradley: Given the prices that we charge to students and schools, what sort of improvements have been made in Flynn… I mean ENCOM OS-12?
Richard Mackey: This year we put a “12” on the box.

[After the security guard ‘corners’ him on top of the building]
Sam: Don’t sweat it. Your boss is okay with this.
Guard: The hell he is!
Sam: Your boss works for the CEO, and the CEO works for the shareholders. Now do you know who the biggest shareholder is?
Guard: I don’t know, some kid.
[Sam spreads his hands, indicating himself]

Sam: Alan, you’re acting like I’m gonna to find him sitting there working. Just “Hey kiddo. Lost track of time”.
Alan: [Throws him the keys] Wouldn’t that be something?

[Sam has entered the Grid, the digital world his father found twenty years ago. He has been captured by guards, and forced to fight in the arena.]
Sam Flynn: What am I supposed to do?
Gem: Survive.

Computer: Combatant 3 versus Rinzler.
[Rinzler steps forward]
Crowd: Rinzler! Rinzler! Rinzler!
Sam: You got to be kidding me.
[Rinzler reaches back and pulls out his disk and separates it into two. Sam tries the same thing, but can’t]
Sam: Oh, come on. Is that even legal?

Sam Flynn: Where am I? Am I on the grid? Who are you? [CLU's helmet opens, revealing Kevin Flynn's face] Dad?
CLU: Sam. Look at you, man. Look at the size of you.

Sam Flynn: So, you were trapped in here.
CLU: That's right.
Sam Flynn: And you're in charge.
CLU: Right again. Two for two.
Sam Flynn: So, can we just go home?
CLU: Not in the cards. Not for you.
Sam Flynn: [Surprised] Well, that's a hell of a way to treat your son.
CLU: Oh, that. [Looks at Sam] I'm not your father, Sam. But I am very, very happy to see you.

[After being handed a lightcycle in its dormant form]
Sam: What’s this? What do I do with this?
Jarvis: I’ll give you a hint. Not that.

Sam: They’re turning around.
Quorra: Not by choice. Their vehicles aren’t designed to work off-Grid. They’ll malfunction on this terrain.
Sam: What about us?
Quorra: [laughs] Obviously not.

Kevin Flynn: Sam?
Sam Flynn: Long time.
Kevin Flynn: You have no idea. You're here. [hugs him] You're here.
Sam Flynn: I'm here.
Kevin Flynn: You're big.
Sam Flynn: [looks up and down at his father, bewildered] You're...
Kevin Flynn: [nods, and finishes his son's statement] Old.

Quorra: Flynn shared them with me. I've read them all.
Sam Flynn: Huh. Light reading. Tolstoy, Dovstoyevsky, I-Ching. "Journey Without a Goal." Must have a killer ending.
Quorra: Flynn is teaching me about the art of the selfless. About removing oneself from the equation. But between you and me, Jules Verne is my favorite. Do you know Jules Verne?
Sam Flynn: Sure.
Quorra: [delighted] What's he like?

Kevin Flynn: The Miracle...You remember. ISOs, isomorphic algorithms, a whole new life form.
Sam Flynn: And you created them?
Kevin Flynn: [Laughs] No, no. They manifested, like a flame. They weren't really, really from anywhere. The conditions were right, and they came into being. For centuries we dreamed of gods, spirits, aliens, and intelligence beyond our own. I found them in here, like flowers in a wasteland. Profoundly naive; unimaginably wise. They were spectacular. Everything I'd hope to find in the system; control, order, perfection. None of it meant a thing. Been living in a hall of mirrors. The ISOs shattered it, the possibilities of their root code, their digital DNA. Disease? History! Science, philosophy, every idea man has ever had about the Universe up for grabs. Biodigital jazz, man. The ISOs, they were going to be my gift to the world.
Sam Flynn: So what happened?
Kevin Flynn: CLU. CLU happened.
[Flashback sequence shows CLU's corruption, and Tron sacrificing himself to save Flynn.]
Kevin Flynn: It was a coup. Tron, he fought for me. I never saw him again.
Sam Flynn: So why didn't you fight?
Quorra: He did.
Kevin Flynn: CLU fed on my resistance. The more I fought, the more powerful he became. It was impressive, really. And my miracle? CLU saw the ISOs as an imperfection, so he destroyed them.

Kevin: My disk is everything Sam. It’s the master key. The golden ticket. The way out. And not just for me.
Sam: What do you mean?
Kevin: Our worlds are more connected than anyone knows. Clu figures if I can be in…
Sam: He can be out?
Kevin: With my disk, it’s possible.
Sam: And then what?
Kevin: Game over. The guy doesn’t dig imperfection. What’s more imperfect than our world? I can't let that happen. I won't.
Sam: So what do we do? Nothing?
Kevin: It's amazing how productive doing nothing can be.

Sam: We can go home. Don't you want that?
Kevin: Sometimes, life has a way of moving you past things like wants and hopes.

Castor: Where's your sense of humor, my friend?
Bartik: Programs are disappearing, Castor. Soon none of us will be left. Zuse can unite the factions, foment revolution.
Castor: Of course Zuse can do these things.
Bartik: Grant me an audience.
Castor: Your enthusiasm is intoxicating, my dear Batik, but Zuse's time is precious. We, shall, see. If you'll excuse me for a moment, I have to attend to something. But have a drink! Courtesy of the End of Line club!
Bartik: [sees Sam Flynn] It is happening.

[Kevin Flynn creates CLU]
Kevin Flynn: You are CLU.
CLU: I am CLU.
Kevin Flynn: You will create the perfect system.
CLU: I will create the perfect system.
Kevin Flynn: [embracing CLU] Together we're going to change the world, man.

[After escaping and realizing Kevin had lost his disk, Sam wants to go back to get it]
Kevin: No, we stay together.
Sam: Dad, I can do this.
Kevin: You’ve done enough already! Sam, you’re really… You’re messing with my Zen thing, man.

Zuse: [Nervously] I realize that our alliance is, at times, uneasy. But always necessary. You know you need me, right where I am. Clu?
Clu: Of course you’re right. Enjoy the drink.
(Black guards setting up bombs as Clu walks away]
Clu: [Chuckling] End of line, man.

Sam Flynn: Ice caps are melting, war in the Middle East, Lakers/Celtics back at it. I don't know, rich are getting richer, poor are getting poorer. Cell phones, online dating, Wi-fi.
Kevin Flynn: What's Wi-fi?
Sam Flynn: Wireless interlinking.
Kevin Flynn: Of digital devices?
Sam Flynn: Yeah.
Kevin Flynn: Huh. I thought of that in '85.
[both laugh]

Sam: Must have been something before Clu screwed it up.
Kevin: No, no, he… He’s me. I screwed it up. Chasing after perfection. Chasing after what was right in front of me. [Turns to Sam] Right in front of me.
Sam: Look what you’ve accomplished. It’s incredible.
Kevin: [Put a hand on Sam’s shoulder] Sam. I’d have given it all up for one more day with you.

Kevin: She’s the miracle, man. Everything I ever worked for. “A digital frontier to reshape the human condition.”
Sam: I always thought that was just a plug line.

[Sam and Quorra gazing at the portal ahead]
Quorra: It’s how I imagine the sunrise to be.
Sam: Oh, trust me. There’s no comparison.
Quorra: What’s it like?
Sam: The sun?
Quorra: Yeah.
Sam: Wow. I’ve never had to describe it. Warm. Radiant. [looks at her] Beautiful.

Kevin: I don’t think this is a good idea.
Quorra: You’re probably right.
[Pushes the controls further on.]

[Kevin Flynn and CLU confront each other at the portal]
Kevin Flynn: Had a feeling you'd be here!
CLU: [laughs] The cycles haven't been kind, have they?
Kevin Flynn: No! You don't look so bad.
CLU: I did everything! Everything you ever asked!
Kevin Flynn: I know you did.
CLU: I executed the plan!
Kevin Flynn: As you saw it.
CLU: You... You promised that we would change the world, together. You broke your promise!
Kevin Flynn: I know. I understand that now.
CLU: I took the system to its maximum potential. I created the perfect system!
Kevin Flynn: The thing about perfection is that it's unknowable. It's impossible, but it's also right in front of us, all the time. You wouldn't know that because I didn't, when I created you! I'm sorry, CLU! I'm sorry.

CLU: [taking Flynn's identity disc] You knew I'd beat you. And still you did all this. For him? [CLU realizes that he is holding Quorra's disc] No...! No... Why?!
Kevin Flynn: He's my son!

Kevin Flynn: Goodbye, kiddo...
[CLU climbs up, and runs toward the Portal. Kevin Flynn begins re-integration to stop him.]
CLU: NOOOO!!!
[Kevin Flynn re-integrates with CLU, the force of their detonation destroys the Grid]

Sam: Oh, and, you were right, Alan.
Alan: About what?
Sam: About everything.

Quorra: So what’s next, Sam?
Sam: I guess we’re supposed to change the world.

Cast[edit]

About Tron: Legacy[edit]

  • Well the thing about these costumes is they don’t stretch. So it was certainly, once we had our last fitting it was like okay this is the size of the costume now. So just so it can’t change. It’s not like we can do a little adjustment on this one, each suit was a sculpture. It was such an intricate piece of– of craftsmanship. So you couldn’t say like oh, well, they’ll give me another one or oh, , maybe I could let this out a little at the seams. And so there was a certain dedication to the suit, a relationship we had to have with our suits, good and bad. But, of course after over four months of working and, you fluctuate physically, and of course you train and train and train for movie and want to ask you start doing a movie you don’t have time to train. but it was, luckily I survived and was able to stay in that suit just enough, just until the last second.
