The Foreword of the Nouvi Zákon

- To every Christian who will read these words:
- grace, peace, blessing and healht in our Lord
- Jesus Christ! Amen!
- § 1. Two things are admirable about the exhibition of God's great care for the words of the Old and the New Testaments, in which He revealed His holy will and the straining salvation of the human race: we must bear in mind both of them and praise the Lord for them from the bottom of our hearts.
- § 2. The first thing is: He let his word to be written by prophets in Hebrew in the Old Testament and by apostles in Greek in the New Testament. He preserved the wholeness and pureness of his words up till the present day despite many changes in the world. The second thing is: in every era and in every nation He awakened people who spoke different languages; they translated the Old and the New Testaments from Hebrew and Greek originals into their mother tongues – some entirely, some in part.
- § 3. Truly, many people began to doubt His perfection and deny the Holy Bible. But we, who believe in the truth, know that it has been preserved in all its wholeness and purity from the beginnings up till the present day.
- § 4. Regarding the books of the New Testament – we are familiar with the cunningness of those who went astray, away from the right, pure Christian religion – how often they wanted to point out the faultiness of the Holy Bible. We are also acquainted with the blind boldness of those in our tume who collected – without distinction or reason – all kinds of opposing and different readings (variantes inter se lectiones) of the New Testament. I believe they did so not from evil inclinations, but from immature ones; this is why their work seems to indicate that the Holy Bible is not perfect.
- § 5. But neither the former with their cuningness nor the latter with their boldness managed to harm the words of the New Testament: on the contrary, even more light was shed on it; its initial simplicity and pureness came out of the darkness, where it was kept from Christ's birth up to the Middle Ages (tempore medii aevi).
- § 6. Thank you God! Due to His mercy, we now have samples of both testaments, the Old and the New, which are without flaws and identical to the words that were originally written down. The books of the New Testament are related to and united with the first words of the holy apostles to such extent that nobody with a sound mind can doubt their purity and wholeness.
- § 7. Thus, neither the old nor the new, contemporary interpreters of the Holy Bible fear that they should not translate – using reason guided by the Holy Spirit – the New Testament, which was purified by wise men from all evilness and harmonized with the firs letter (inspired) by the Holy Spirit.
- § 8. This mission, which many holy men embarked on for the benefit of many nations who spoke various languages, and which begins in our time wherever the need for it arises, is the evidence of God's other care, the care of the Holy Bible and the human race.
- § 9. The situatuon of today's human race is such that most people have to be satisfied with the language the have learned from childhood and used in the country where they live. Not everyone has the advantage of understanding God who speaks through the Holy Bible in Hebrew of Greek. Today this is not useful and we do not need to expect that.
- § 10. Since every person – from any nation, speaking any language – has to know God's truth, which brings salvation through the Holy Bible, and as nobody should be excluded from reaching this cognition, we must not be envious or deny anybody the tool which leads him to it. Instead we should make sure that everybody gets this tool. This is the wish of God, who has taken care for the translations of the first letter into different languages of the human race. For this reason He inspired His apostles with the Holy Spirit, when He sent them to preach the Holy Gospel to different nations in different languages. After this gift ceased and the holy men finished the canon (of books of the New and the Old Testaments), He did not want the Holy Bible to remain written down only in Hebrew and Greek, because not all people could understand it. He wanted the salvation for each person of each nation who speaks its own language, so He awakened men in all nations who knew various languages. Through the He let His first words (textus originalis) of both Testaments be translated into other languages, so that people all around the world could understand Him.
- § 11. After the Ascension of Christ, this saintly care of God, directed to the true blessing of so many nations and languages, did not touch only the nations who live in the lands of the rising sun, since the New Testament was soon translated into Syrian, which was then, mixed with Chaldean, spoken almost everywhere. God revealed His care also to othe people, those who live in the lands of the setting sun, when He enabled them to read the holy word in their own languages, translated from Hebrew and Greek through diligence of pious and wise men.
- § 12. In this regard the Vlachs or Itals were most progressive. Soon after the death of the apostles, they got – unknown by whom – a Vlachian or, as today ours Slovenes say, Latin Bible. St. Augustine calls this version Italic, and St. Jerome calls it common, or free. This Bible was followed by number of other Bibles following the gospel preached in Europe – in many other languages and in many other countries. So much so that it is today hard to find a nation in the Western countries that is not able to read and use the mighty work of God in its own language. The pious diligence and diligent piety even induced our people to carry the holy word not only in India, Malabar and America, but also to lead many thousand from those lands to the recognition of Christ. They gave them the translated Bible for their salvation.
- § 13. God has had always and still He has care for the whole human race and for the whole Slavic nation: just as He filled the land from the Mediterranean Sea to the White Sea – tje whole Dalmatia, Istria, Slavonia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Carniola, Styria, Hungary, Moravia, Bohemia, Poland and Moscow – with Slavic nations, He also encouraged some people from these nations to translate the Holy Bible into their mother tongue. It suffices to focus only on the people of Carniola and Lower Styria, who were – we believe – together with Hungarian Slovenes in the counties Vas, Zala and Somogy the remainders of those Vandals who went to the Vlachian and Spanish states in the 5th century ad. (saeculo V), from where they sailed to Africa. One of their descendants was Primož Trubar, the servant of God's word in Urach, as he called himself. In 1562 he published the New Testament in the glagolitic script in the Carniolian language. The Next year, in 1536, Anton Dalmata, Stephen of Istria (Štefan Istrianski) and Jurij Jurjevič printed two books in that same language – the Four Gospellers in the first one and the Deeds of the apostles with Letters and John's revelation in the other. Both were printedin quatro, according to our samples. The Jurij Dalmatin translated the whole Bible (the Old and New Testaments) into the Styrian language, with great effort, as he said. It was printed in folio in Wittenberg in 1548 in Vlachian and Latin script. Praiseworthy is also the effort of Mihael Francel who, in Budica, presented Slovenes in Lusatia (Sorbs), or Vandals, with the gospels of St. Matthew and St. Mark in 1670, with the epistle of St. Paul to the Romans and Galatians in 1693 and then even with the New Testament in 1706. The books were printed in octavo.
- § 14. Who will disallow those Slovenes who live between the Mura and Raba the right to translate these holy books into the language in which they understand God talking to them through prophets and apostles' letters? God tells them too to read these books in order to get prepared for salvation in the faith of Jesus Christ. But they cannot receive this from Trubar's, Dalmatin's, Francel's, or other translations (versio.) The language of our Hungarian Slovenes is different from other languages and unique in its own characteristics. Already in the aforementioned translations there are differences. Therefore, a man had to come who would translate the Bible and bring praise for God and salvation for this nation. God encouraged István Küzmics for this work, a priest from Surd, who translated – with the help of the Holy Spirit and with great diligence – the whole New Testament from Greek into the language you are reading and hearing. With the help (and expenses) of many religious souls, the Holy Bible was printed and given to you for the same reason Küzmics prepared Vöre Krsztsánszke krátki návuk, which was printed in 1754.
- § 15. Therefore think, religious Christians, when you read this: what great and blessed good this work will bring in God's church to you and to your children. Thank God for the fatherly care He shows for His words in Hebrew and Greek, which he gave to this world and preserved up till the present day. He did not allow a single thing to be lost from his original words. Therefore, understand hov much praise and faith you have to give Him from your humble heart! In every period and in every nation He encouraged people to translate the Holy Bible and bestowed upon them diligence, piety and the power to understand different languages. The holy books can be found in almost as many variants as there are languages in the world. This evidently shows that the prophecies of the Old Testament and the foretelling of our blessing in Messiah's time have come true.
- § 16. Understand also: you, who read the Slovene books of the New Testament in you mother tongue or will read them – how thankfully you must praise and honour the unspeakable kindness of God! You must also respect the writer of these books and appreciate the care he showed to you and to your nation. This treasure, for which your parents and you waited a long time, is now given into your hands without hope or effort. Listen from one side and read from the other, in order to understand God and His will for eternal salvation, which is transmitted to you in your language.
- § 17. Therefore enjoy this gift of God with the help of the Holy Spirit, enjoy it for the sake of real salvation of your soul. Read the published books for your own good. If you cannot read, then listen carefully, piously and constantly how they are read and keep in your heart what you understand in them. Study the things you cannot understand, study them by yourself and with the help of others. May the great car of God encourage you, He cares for the whole Holy Bible as well as four the part you are holding in your hands. He also cares for your physical and spiritual salvation. Do not satisfy yourself with mere understanding of what the Holy Spirit teaches you, but try to turn what you have learned into good deeds, which will bring salvation through the right faith and through holy life. May the Holy Bible, which is useful for learning, reproving, doing and justly repairing, make you a whole divine human being, rady for each good deed.

- § 17. V'zívajzáto ete Bo'zi dár ſzpomoucsi Dühà ſzvétoga, vören Krſzttsenik, v'zívaj ga na právo tvoje düſe zvelicsanye. Sti tè na tvoj haſzek vö dáne kni'zicze. Csi je ſteti neznas: gda ſze ſtéjo, poſzlüsaj je gyedrno, pobo'zno, nepreſztanoma; i, ka 'znyih razmis, vſzrczi zdr'zi. Ka pa preczi nemres zapopádnoti: ſztvojom i zdrügi pomocsjom zgrüntávaj. Náto te naj nadigáva Bo'za velika ſzkrb: ſtero on mà, kakti na czejlo ſzvéto píſzmo, tak i na eto, kotero pred ſzebom más. Pouleg toga eſcse tvoje telovno i dühovno zvelicsanye. Na zadovoli ſze ſztejm, ka razmis ona, ſtera te Düh Goſzpodnov po etoj ſzvojoj rejcsi vcsí: nego nátom bojdi; da, ka ſzi ſze návcso, po právoj vöri i ſzvétom 'zítki na tvoj zvelicsánſzki haſzek obrnés. Etak eto ſzvéto píſzmo, haſznovito na vcsenyè, na káranye, na ravnanye i na pobolsávanye, vu praviczi, vcsiní tebé popolnoga Bo'zega csloveka i na vſze dobro delo ſzpodobnoga.
- § 18. Ti pa, Goſzpodne, dáj: da nám tvoja rejcs bode na veſzeljè i radoſzt; ár je imenüvano ime tvoje nad nami, oh Jehovah vſzej ſeregouv Boug! Ámen.
