Votes for Deletion[edit]

Diplomacy(game)[edit]

Virtually all of the zines the quotes come from are out of print and on the websites linked to they don't mention copyright except for reproduced here with Richard's kind permission. Mr.Sharp is now dead and did not have a company of his own so nobody knows who owns the copyright, or if the copyright even exists. Quite strange too that quotes from a book made in Britain could break US copyright laws. Nevertheless I will leave the template there in an effort to get Aphaia to stop criticising me. The matter is simple and I hope we can resolve it soon.

)

Sioraf 14:38, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

I am sure Aphaia did not mean to harass you. Wikiquote's few administrators have so much to do that they must resort to using boilerplate messages. If the one on your talk page did not fit the situation very well, don't take it personally. Apart from diplomacy, I think the underlying issues in this situation are:
  • Removing content from talk pages goes against the Wikimedia philosophy. Preserving the continuity of discussions is important for reaching consensus and for documenting it, especially when someone changes their mind. If you wrote something that does not seem germane or appropriate in hindsight, it is better to add a comment to that effect (e.g. "On second thought, ignore that....") than to delete it. Deleting other people's comments is inappropriate, except in cases of blatant vandalism.
  • The {{checkcopyright}} tag puts the article on a list to be reviewed by someone who is familiar with the legal issues. It will be removed after the article has been checked and any problems resolved. There is currently a backlog of more than 120 articles to be reviewed, so please be patient.
Peace ~ Ningauble 16:51, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Yeah I know removing other people's comments is inappropriate...usuallyItalic text but I thought I would do it anyway due to WP:Ignore all rules stating the rules may be ignored to improve the article which was my sole intention. That's it.

William O. Douglas quote[edit]

I did find a source for the quote you had originally ranked at 4 for October 16:

  • The way to combat noxious ideas is with other ideas. The way to combat falsehoods is with truth.

In making this day's selection, I will assume that this would remain your preference, if you don't notice this message in time to alter your choices. ~ Kalki 23:32, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I am glad you found it. This is a favorite of mine because, to me, it is a powerful reminder to strive toward what is desired rather than engage in counterproductive strife against what is not. ~ Ningauble 13:03, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Admin?[edit]

Ningauble, I have appreciated your diligent work in rooting out vandalism and pages that need help or deletion. I was wondering if you would consider becoming an administrator, if I were to nominate you and the community voted you in. What do you think? ~ UDScott 20:04, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Sure, I would be willing to help take the garbage out. More admin coverage might result in quicker blocking of the occasional vandalism rampage. ~ Ningauble 21:13, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Great! I've nominated you (see Wikiquote:Requests for adminship). Please accept the nomination there to start the process. ~ UDScott 21:44, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

User talk:69.235.38.48[edit]

I notice you've blocked 69.235.38.48 (talkcontribsdeleted contribsWHOISRDNStraceRBLsblock userblock log) here on Wikiquote. (See User talk:69.235.38.48.) The same IP has been vandalizing the English Wikipedia (mostly by switching Minnesota for Michigan in various articles), so I've blocked him for a week there. He's complained at en-wp that he got blocked at Wikiquote -- and he's been blocked here for good reason. I just thought you might want to be aware that he's vandalizing on two different projects. --Elkman 16:43, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up. Should another block become necessary, cross-wiki vandalism will make it a longer one. ~ Ningauble 17:10, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Bud Selig[edit]

Hello. I recently created the Bud Selig article. It's my first article here on Wikiquote... and I just wanted to make sure it is correctly formatted. Could you possibly look over the article for me? Thanks, – RyanCross (talk) 05:33, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

The format looks good. I see only one mistake:
  • For the quote about, begin the citation with the name of the person quoted (as a wikilink if available). E.g. "John Doe, quoted in..."
If you like, you can title the "about" section generically like this: ==About {{PAGENAME}}== . I would omit place of birth, as a biographical detail Wikiquote does not usually concern itself with, and just include [[Category:Americans]] at the bottom.
Thanks for asking, and happy wikiing. ~ Ningauble 06:10, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Done. Thank you for your help. :) – RyanCross (talk) 06:43, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Could you check my recent edits to Manny Ramirez? The quotes on that page are from that one source. There are quite a few quotes in the source, so I used a few for the article. I just want to make sure I'm doing everything alright with the formatting, since it's somewhat different than at the Wikiquote I'm also active at. Also, I'm not sure of the about section if formatted corrected when indicating who said the quote. Your help is appreciated. – RyanCross (talk) 07:25, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

I am not sure of the best way to handle multiple uses of a source, but I made a revision along these lines: give name and title at each item and relegate the rest to a footnote. This is a compromise between keeping source identification integral to each item, per Wikiquote practice, and avoiding excessive redundancy. Notice how I moved ref tags from the quotes to the citations below.
I also changed Sourced to Attributed because the "reporter" neither claims to have interviewed the people himself nor states where he got the quotes. The source reads more like an amateur blog than a piece of professional journalism: notice how he begins by describing a gathering before the game and goes on to "quote" statements that could only be made afterwards.
You can remove the PROD message if you want, but be sure to explain in the edit summary and/or the discussion page that you believe the objection has been resolved.
So it goes... ~ Ningauble 18:30, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

italic / non-italic[edit]

Hai Ningauble, Thanks for the compliments and your remarks. I still don't understand them well, I think. My English; I am Dutch! When I see the O'Keeff page now, is that the correct way of doing it? Did you correct it completely?? If that is the case than I know I can use this page as an example for the next ones I want to make for other artists.

all the best, Benfo 13:21, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Hai Ningauble,

Sorry I lost confidence in my english and have stopped placing quotations; that is a pity, because I collected a lot of quotations in the meanwhile of artists / painters.

Can you please give me an correct example (just a fake) so that I can use that as a guide??

all the best, Benfo 13:21, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Thank you[edit]

Thank you for adding categories to those templates, sorry I missed that. Cirt (talk) 17:32, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

italic / non-italic- 2[edit]

Thanks Ningauble. I think I understand. With the next new page I let you know and please cheque me again. I think it will be quotes of Pollock.

Will you please cheque my Userpage? Is this allowed and correct? Can I place there some paintings of Benfo, to give a idea of our goals?

Prod[edit]

Thanks for this. My fault. I forgot we had a {{prod}} template, so I tagged it for speedy deletion instead. I'll be sure to use it next time if I think a page should be deleted but it doesn't meet any criteria of WQ:CSD. Thanks, – RyanCross (talk) 17:55, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

No problem. Even though the articles are headed for deletion anyway, giving due process to newcomers leaves the door open for learning to become good contributors. It has been known to happen. ~ Ningauble 18:32, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
I never thought of it that way. Thanks for the thought, – RyanCross (talk) 19:43, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Speedy delete tags[edit]

Can you adjust {{delete}} so it does have a reason parameter like {{db}} for others in the future that might make similar assumptions as I did? Cirt (talk) 17:02, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

I am already thinking of doing something like this. Giving reasond is a Good Thing™. ~ Ningauble 18:35, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Ah okay thanks. :) Cirt (talk) 18:36, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Template categories[edit]

Thank you very much for that suggestion, I will do that from now on. As far as the merge-category proposal you made, I have no objections. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 17:43, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Quotes on the Pontic Greek genocide[edit]

Hi Ningauble

I am new to wikiquote so would like a few brief pointers on how to fix the major issues that concern you on the article you listed as needing cleanup. Thanks.--Xenovatis 08:49, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Xenovatis, thanks for your interest in contributing to Wikiquote. I used the {{theme-cleanup}} tag to indicate that the article does not follow the standard format illustrated in Wikiquote:Templates/Themes. For an example on a similar theme that uses the correct format, see Armenian Genocide (although some of the quotations are too lengthy, in my opinion, and the bold font is unnecessary). Here are some formatting points to consider:
  • Note the structure of each item – the quote comes first, with the citation bulleted immediately beneath. Unlike Wikipedia style, citations belong with the quotes, not in the footnotes.
  • The present article has almost as much commentary as quotation, which is too much. Let the quotes speak for themselves. Occasionally a brief explanation is needed to clarify what the quote refers to, or who it is responding to. If so, it goes after the citation. But note how the example uses very few explanations – if the words do not speak for themselves then it probably isn't a very good quote.
  • It is usually best to arrange the quotes alphabetically by author, or chronologically if they cover an extended period. Grouping them as "from books" vs. "from journals" is not really relevant.
Some other points to consider for improving this article, not directly related to format:
  • The title should not say "Quotes on..." It goes without saying that Wikiquote is for quotes.
  • Several of the quotes appear to be included solely for the purpose of documenting use of terms such as "genocide" to refer to the events. This is certainly a significant point, but it is best to select just those quotes that are particularly insightful, poignant, or famous in making the point, not fragments that just illustrate usage. Recall that Wikiquote's core mission is to collect great quotations, not to document theses or debates.
  • The introduction ought not say "list of academic quotes on..." It would be entirely appropriate for other editors to add quotations from other notable sources, such as political leaders, that are relevant to the theme. Also, the introduction does not really need to discuss terminology at any length. It only needs to briefly identify the subject of the article.
Your interest in improving the article is greatly appreciated. Happy editing! ~ Ningauble 16:57, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
Ningauble, thanks for taking the time to guide me through this. I will be implementing these changes. Take care.--85.75.93.166 17:08, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Adding Armenian to the main page[edit]

Hi Ningauble,

Could you please help me add Armenian among the language options on the main page? Here's the link for the Armenian main page: [1].

Thanks! -Chaojoker

I am not familiar with the policies that may be involved, so it may be better to take your request to the Village Pump. However, according to this list at Meta, hy.wikiquote has not grown large enough to be considered an active project yet. Keep on quoting! ~ Ningauble 15:10, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Working on it! - Chaojoker 22:07, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

lost my confidence[edit]

Hai Ningauble,

Sorry I lost confidence in my english and have stopped placing quotations; that is a pity, because I collected a lot of quotations in the meanwhile of artists / painters.

Can you please give me an correct example (just a fake) so that I can use that as a guide-line??

I improved (I hope) the quotations of Asger Jorn. Can you cheque them please? And give your comment?

kind regards

Benfo

Hi Benfo,
The first journal citation in Asger Jorn could be formatted like this:
  • "Intime Banaliteter", Helhesten 1, 1941, Denmark, p. 75
It helps to provide the month also. Supposing this were Vol. 1 No. 1 published in January, the journal citation would be:
  • "Intime Banaliteter", Helhesten 1 (1), January 1941, Denmark, p. 75
The ARKEN book citations can be formatted with a link, since there is a wikipedia article, like this:
Also, you don't need a date before the quote, it is in the citation. And you don't need to explain quotes that are already clear enough. For example, the first quote should just say:
  • The great works of art is the complete banality, and the fault with most banalities is that they are not banal enough. Banality here is not infinite in its depth and consequence, but rests on a foundation of spirituality and aesthetics.
If an explanation is really needed, put it after the citation not before the quote.
I hope this helps. ~ Ningauble 19:18, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
Hi Ningauble,

Thank you for your suggestions on the Asger Jorn quotes, I will follow them as far as possible. They help me a lot!

Concerning the Benf-two persons-subject with one account: I changed the text already. I like to express that the quotes are a common result of Ben Vollers and my, resulting from our common practice (like we do the Benfo-painting together), but it is only me who use the account Benfo-Dutch and place the collected quotes. I hope you can communicate this with the others who are worrying about this subject. And if I did not make it clear enough in the changed text, please give me suggestion how to improve this. kind regards, Benfo 15:40, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Asger Jorn quotes[edit]

Hi Ningauble,

I did correct the Jorn quotes as best as possible. I hope this is better now. I kept on using the year in front of the quote because I like to give the year the quote is really made or written, and that is very often another date than the publication. If you have another suggestion for expressing this, please tell me. The link ARKEN I just now understand and still will correct it.

all the best,

Benfo 22:22, 27 December 2008 (UTC) (When you react, can you please do this in my User:talk??)
