How do I add an accent mark to words? -- On the hill 03:20, 10 Dec 2004

Sorry for the delay in responding. I've been having Internet connection troubles. Based on your different phrasing of this question on your and my Talk pages, I assume you're interested both in how to insert accented characters and how to create an article whose title includes such characters.

First, there are two basic ways in Wikidom to add accented characters to text. The "proper" way is to use Unicode special characters (e.g., é for é). You can find lists of these character labels in many places, including WebReference's HTML Character Reference. Just start the character name with an ampersand (&) and end it with a semicolon (;). This is supposed to work with all modern browsers and avoids character encoding problems with non-Windows and/or non-English computers, but some very old browsers don't handle this too well.

The other way, if you're using a Microsoft Windows computer, is to insert the accented character either through the keyboard (which I don't have time to explain at the moment) or by using the Character Map utility (go to Start->Run, enter "charmap", select the character you want, and press copy to get it in your clipboard; then paste it into place in the Wiki page.) This is not the preferred way, but is in common use.

As far as creating articles with accented characters in the titles goes, you can do it the same way you'd create any article referenced in another page. For your cited interest in films, you can go to List of films, add the title (e.g., Amélie) to it, and then click on the resulting red link. This will bring up an edit page for that article title.

Incidentally, I noticed that you seemed to be asking this question precisely because of Amélie (which happened to be the first relevant film I thought of — one of my favorite foreign films). I went ahead and moved the Amelie quote page to Amélie, corrected the accent mark in the text, and added it to List of films. Amelie is now a redirect to the actual article (always a good idea when dealing with accent marks). — Jeff Q 19:44, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
