Sorry, Prasuk, I do not speak Polish. Why do you ask? --Ubiquity 14:49, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dziady translations[edit]

Hi, Prasuk. Thank you for adding quotations to the Adam Mickiewicz article. I appreciate your providing your own translations, so that English-speaking people can enjoy this fine poetry. I am sorry to tell you, though, that the translations are not the best. Some of them do not make sense in English, and some of them, though they make sense, do not sound poetic. I do not speak Polish but I speak English very well, and have some knowledge of poetry. Can we work on these together? I will take your translations and try to render them into better, more poetic English, and you can compare my efforts to the Polish original and tell me if they still capture the sense of it. Also, please show me where the line breaks belong, as they contribute to the meaning and rhythm of the poem, and have been preserved in the other quotations.

  • Ja i ojczyzna to jedno. Nazywam sie Milijon, bo za milijony kocham i cierpię katuszę.
    • Your Translation: I and motherland is the unity. My name is Million, because I love for millions and suffer agonies
    • Proposed Translation: I and motherland are one. My name is Million, because for millions do I love and suffer agonies.
  • Bo słuchajcie i zważcie na siebie: Kto nie dotknął ziemi ni razu, ten nigdy nie może być w niebie.
    • Your Translation: They are listen and they are warily on herself: Who never touch land, yon never be in heaven
    • Proposed Translation: So listen to them, heed them: Who never touch the earth, can never be in heaven.
  • Herod - Panie cała Polska młoda wydana w ręce Heroda. Co widzę? Długie białe dróg krzyżowych biegi, Drogi długie - nie dojrzeć - przez puszcze - przez śniegi, Wszystkie na północ! Tam, tam, w kraj daleki, płyną jak rzeki
    • Your Translation: Tyrant send up - Herod - God! All Young Poland hand over in Herode hands! What I see? Long white crux roads runs Roads are longs no see thorough Old growth forest thorough snows All roads lead on North. Here, here in away country Swim as river
    • Proposed Translation: Herod - all young Poland came from Herod's hands. What do I see? Roads like long white crosses, long roads through the forests, through the snow, all roads leading North. There, there, to the far country, they float like rivers.

(This last one gave me a lot of trouble, I really wasn't sure what you meant.)

Let me know what you think of these, and when you feel we have them right, we can add them to the main page.

Proposal[edit]

Thanks, Prasuk, but currently I don't think we need another bureaucrat, and even if we did I'm not sure I would want to be one. --Ubiquity 10:55, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Becoming an administrator[edit]

There is no specific requirement in terms of number of edits, but you need to have a lot more experience and presence in the community than you do now. The most important thing is to show the community that you are a useful and reliable presence on Wikiquote. You can do this in the following ways:

  1. Watch New pages to catch opportunities to help clean up articles by people not familiar with our standards.
  2. Watch Recent changes to catch and revert vandalism.
  3. Participate in discussions at Wikiquote:Votes for deletion and Wikiquote:Village pump.

When you have done this long enough, you won't need to propose yourself for admin status -- someone will probably propose you! Let me know if I can help. --Ubiquity 12:42, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to announce your philosophy on your user page, but i don't think many people will follow up on it. Since you should always give your reasons when you vote on deletions, it will soon become apparent to people that you are an inclusionist. --Ubiquity 13:25, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
