Wikiquote:Changing username

This page is an official policy on Wikiquote. It has wide acceptance among editors and is considered a standard that all users should follow. Please do not make significant changes to this page without prior discussion.

This page permits users to request, and bureaucrats to consider and carry out, username changes. It is generally only possible to rename an account to a name which is not yet taken. Please check Wikiquote:Username to see if your desired username is considered to be appropriate.

Instructions

Please follow these instructions carefully to ensure the correct processing of your request.

• Check that the username you are requesting does not yet exist. This may be done via the search function at Special:Listusers; if the name appears in the list, even if the link is red, the name is taken. Be sure to capitalize the first letter of the username, as the software does not permit usernames that begin with a lowercase letter. Do not create an account under the new name.
• To file a request, please edit this page and put the following template at the bottom:

  Make sure to include your present and requested username and the reason you wish your name to be changed, following this format

• Be sure you have logged in under your present username. Verify that you have spelled both names correctly. Save the page.
• If your request is for usurpation, submit your request to Wikiquote:Changing username/Usurpation and follow the instruction on that page.
  • In case of usurpation of an impostor or for SUL, indicate that you are requesting for usurpation here on English Wikiquote on your user page at your home wiki and include the link to that page in your request.
• Check back periodically to see whether a bureaucrat has fulfilled your request or whether additional information is required. Do not be surprised if you suddenly cannot log in to your old account; this merely indicates that your request has been fulfilled.

Effects of a username change:

• When the rename has been completed, your old account will no longer exist in the database. All edits and other user data from your old account, including preferences, watchlist, and password, will have been reattributed to your new account. Your user and talk pages will be transferred to the new name. There is no need for the old name to be blocked.

• The change will appear in the user rename log in the interest of transparency. There is no provision for renaming accounts without logging the change.

Notes

• It is not possible for bureaucrats to merge two accounts, or to reattribute edits from IP addressses. Only registered accounts can be renamed.
• This is for requests on the English Wikiquote only. To change your username on another Wikimedia project, please ask a bureaucrat on that project or make a request on Meta at Requests for permissions.
• As an alternative, please consider changing your signature. This will change your "public appearance" on talk pages and other places where you sign your username with ~~~~.
• It may be easier for you simply to create a new account (although names too similar to existing ones are automatically blocked from creation). You can then discontinue use of the old one. It does not need to be deleted; disused accounts are harmless and may be safely ignored.
• Be aware: This change will not affect signatures you have already left on talk pages, or other places where you signed your username with ~~~~. Those pages will continue to display your signature (including the link to your old username) unless edited manually.

• Comment: I'm personally tempted to decline this request due to confusion and uneasiness of recognition; a symbol is hard to type (I have no idea what this symbol is exactly / how I can input this in any other way than copying etc.), but I am not sure if our username policy forbid explicitly, so I'd like other bureaucrat inputs rather than making a decision by myself alone. --Aphaia 00:37, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
  • I'd be inclined to agree with Aphaia's concern, except that this is an SUL login and the editor is a contributor in excellent standing at Wikipedia.   • It appears that you or somebody else has already registered the requested username. To change to a username that has already been created, you will need to demonstrate that you have registered both names, or submit a usurpation request. As you have very few edits under the username for which you are requesting a change, if you are the person who has registered this username, it would be easier for you to just begin using your preferred username.     • I guess this edit demonstrates that I have (unknowingly) registered the new name by clicking over from enwikipedia while logged in there as the correctly renamed IIBewegung. But then I'm not terribly worried about not having previous contributions of the old user moved to the new user's record. So I guess I'll put in a usurpation request later if/when I feel the need to.
