Wikiquote:Requests for adminship/RyanCross

I am nominating RyanCross to be an administrator here. He has established a record for responsible editing here since August of last year, is an admin on the Simple English Wikiquote, and seems to be a trustworthy candidate for the admin tools here. ~ Kalki 10:47, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Candidate's statement: Well, first of all, I thank admin and bureaucrat Kalki (talk · contributions) for nominating me for adminship.

I think I'd be a very helpful administrator for English Wikiquote. As Kalki says, I've been editing on this project since August last year and have amassed over 1000 edits since. I've grown to enjoy contributing to English Wikiquote as there isn't as much stress and discomfort as there are at other projects I'm active at. I do have admin experience as I've been an active admin on Simple English Wikipedia and Simple English Wikiquote for several months (shouldn't really matter though as what matters is what I've done here).

What exactly have I done for Wikiquote? Well, I've copyedited, sourced, expanded, and cleaned-up quite a lot of articles for Wikiquote. Particularly, I'm proud of the Bud Selig, Steve Lyons, and Gregory Balestrero pages I did significant work on. Look at User:RyanCross/Contributions for more. I welcome new users, do interwiki work on occasions, revert vandalism, tag articles for speedy deletion (along with deletion proposals), and participate in discussion pages such as Administrators' noticeboard, Village pump, and Votes for deletion.

What really pushed me into RfA was realizing that we need more admins (as the saying goes, "the more admins there are the better"), especially ones that are active when I'm active. Just recently did Livonia (talk · contributions) severely vandalize Wikiquote. I tagged the vandalism/nonsense pages and reverted some vandalism the user caused, but couldn't do any further until an admin came by. I could have taken care of the mess sooner if I was an admin. This isn't the first time I had to ask or wait for admin assistance. An example: Special:DeletedContributions/RyanCross (unfortunately, only admins can view that page). You should see I've requested deletion to numerous pages that eventually got deleted. Another example: User_talk:BD2412#CAT:CSD. And another: Wikiquote:Vandalism_in_progress#212.121.210.21.

As an administrator, I intend to take care of speedy/proposed deletion requests when necessary, close VfDs when the appropriate time comes, and block vandals when necessary. I understand and know Wikiquote policies well incase you are wondering (I'm sure I've proven that already). And yes, I do have e-mail activated. Overall, I believe I'll be able to serve as a fine administrator for Wikiquote.

• Question: (Don't worry, I expect to support.) I partially undid your revert here. Does it make any difference, and why?

• Oh, hah, I see what's wrong. I accidentally removed the lead in that edit. My mistake entirely. The lead of any article is the introduction of it, which basically is a short and independent summary of the important aspects of the article's topic. Without it, readers won't know a thing about the topic of the article. The introduction of an article is always important. We also have a rather large backlog of articles needing a lead section. • It was a minimal lead anyway, and no great loss. More importantly from my perspective: when wielding admin tools remember that you are not just maintaining the pages, you are supporting the community that creates the pages. When well-meaning newcomers make naive mistakes it is better to educate by correcting (or tag if you don't have time) than to risk alienation by eradicating. ~ Ningauble 23:51, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
