Cross-dressing or transvestitism is the act of wearing clothes traditionally or stereotypically associated with a different gender.[2] From as early as pre-modern history, cross-dressing has been practiced in order to disguise, comfort, entertain, and express oneself.

Quotes[edit]

  • Rosalind:
    Were it not better,
Because that I am more than common tall,
That I did suit me all points like a man?
A gallant curtle-axe upon my thigh,
A boar-spear in my hand; and—in my heart
Lie there what hidden woman's fear there will—
We'll have a swashing and a martial outside,
As many other mannish cowards have
That do outface it with their semblances.
    Celia:
What shall I call thee when thou art a man?
    Rosalind:
    I'll have no worse a name than Jove's own page;
And therefore look you call me Ganymede.
  • Viola:
I am all the daughters of my father's house,
And all the brothers too: and yet I know not.
    • Shakespeare, Twelfth Night, Act 2, Scene 4

  • That is, the "transvestites", men who dressed and posed as women, men who with their entire being felt like women and wanted to be women who prostituted themselves because the Italian society of the time did not offer them other options for living. (Giampiero Mughini)
  • For no one is makeup more important than for the homosexual who dresses up. The figure of the homosexual who cross-dresses is designated, just as the figure of rhetoric was for Plato, as a simulacrum, a copy without an original, something entirely artificial and uncertain. In this sense, it is very similar to cosmetic color: its purpose is to confuse and seduce, to counterfeit and conceal. (David Batchelor)
  • When a straight man dresses as a woman to have sexual fun, he is a transvestite. When a man is a woman trapped in a man's body and gets a little operation, that's a transsexual. [...] When a gay, however, has too much sense of style for one sex, that is a drag queen. [...] And when a little Hispanic boy puts on a woman's dress... that's simply a boy dressed as a woman. (To Wong Foo, thank you for everything! Julie Newmar)
  • – We are transvestites, but we are still men!
    [...]
    – We are men in skirts! (Transparent)
  • I'm just a sweet transvestite | from the planet Bisesso, of the Transylvania galaxy. (The Rocky Horror Picture Show)
  • "Transvestite" is the scientific name for people who wear clothes of the opposite sex. Many transvestites desire to be of the opposite sex. [...] If we give this man satin underwear, a dress, a sweater, a skirt, he will be the happiest person in the world. He will work better, think better, even play better. He will be more useful to his environment than himself, even to his country, because he is happy. These things constitute his well-being. But, why make-up and hair? He dares to go out on the street with the clothes he so desires to wear, but only with a truly feminine appearance. Long hair, makeup, clothes... The appearance of a girl in reality. Transvestites normally do not wish to change their lives or bodies. Most just want to wear the clothes of the opposite sex. (Glen or Glenda)
