Photoshop illustration representing Captain America's shield, as depicted in Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941). The escutcheon design reflected the character's patriotic motif, incorporating three stars and red, white and blue stripes (order of color varied between the cover and the interior). This design was dropped the following issue in favor of the more familiar circular shield, of which there were at least four different variants between 1941 and the present day.
