Arise, My Love is a 1940 American romantic comedy film about a dashing pilot and a vivacious reporter who have romantic and dramatic adventures in Europe as World War II begins.

Directed by Mitchell Leisen. Written by Billy Wilder, Charles Brackett, and Jacques Théry, based on a story by Benjamin Glazer and Hans Székely (as John S. Toldy).
Here's the gay, glorious story of a war correspondent and a war ace...a romance that could happen only in 1940!

  • You know, when we were in that plane, I had a hunch you were a stinker. Now I'm sure of it.

Tom Martin

  • Ever notice how these European trains always smell of Eau de Cologne and hard-boiled eggs?

Dialogue

[edit]
Father Jacinto: [in Tom's cell, preparing him for death] This is my first execution.
Tom Martin: Don't worry, Father, it's mine too.

Mr. Phillips: Gusto Nash, you're fired, as of immediately!
Augusta Nash: Oh, it's not true!
Mr. Phillips: I know it's not true. I just wanted to taste the words. Sheer rapture!

Augusta Nash: L'amour.
Tom Martin: All right, l'amour. I'm devoting my first evening to it. And my second, my third and my fourth.
Augusta Nash: That's an awful lot of L'amour.
Tom Martin: I was in jail for a long time.

Tom Martin: You know, it's a funny thing that you of all people should be sitting beside me. You're precisely my type.
Augusta Nash: Mmm-hmm. How long were you in that prison?

Tom Martin: Same hair, same cheek bones. Just what I said -- precisely my type.
Augusta Nash: Listen, honey, after 10 months in jail, anything would be your type - a St. Bernard.

Augusta Nash: We hid in the clouds - a sanctuary of whipped cream.
Tom Martin: Is that the sort of stuff you write, Augusta?

Augusta Nash: [Dancing with Tom] Say, you're not bad at all.
Tom Martin: Yeah? Wait'll I hit an air pocket.

Augusta Nash: Thomas Martin, you're crazy.
Tom Martin: Crazy? How?
Augusta Nash: Running after me.
Tom Martin: I'm not running after you. Just happen to be going over the same track, in the same train, in the same direction.

Augusta Nash: Oh, I wasn't expecting you.
Mr. Phillips: Who the heck were you expecting, Jack the Ripper?

Augusta Nash: Don't you think we'd better get back to the inn? What will they think?
Tom Martin: Oh, nothing. It's a French inn.

Augusta Nash: Are they after us?
Tom Martin: They're not looking for bird nests.

Augusta Nash: Thomas Martin - what was that middle name of yours?
Tom Martin: Thomas Fuller Martin, also known as Thomas Fulla Malarky.
Augusta Nash: I'll bet.

Tom Martin: Yeah, when was it? Only yesterday we thought we could throw two people overboard, with their ambitions, their big dreams.
Augusta Nash: God knew better. He threw us right back after them.
