Dil Chahta Hai (transl. The Heart Desires) is a 2001 Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age film, about three inseparable college friends navigating adulthood, relationships, and diverging life paths.

Siddharth: Deepa, why do you love Akash?
Deepa: What do you mean?
Sid: Sometimes, I wonder what makes a person love someone. Why do you love him?
Deepa: I don't know. I just do.
Sid: Despite knowing that Akash -?
Deepa: ... doesn't love me back. Yes, then too!
Sid: Deepa, you're attractive, you're intelligent, you could get just about any guy you like -
Deepa: If that's really true, then why can't I get Akash?!
Sid: I don't know. I do know that if you're in trouble, Akash will do whatever he can to help you. But, Deepa, hoping for anything beyond that -
[picks up some sand in his hand and squeezes it]
Sid: See this sand... the tighter you grip it, the quicker it slips past your fingers.
Deepa: [understanding] Thanks, Sid.
Akash Malhotra: Dad, there is more to life than just signing checks.
Akash's father: Really... like what?
Akash: I don't know yet, but you'll be the first to know when I find out.
[Akash hides from Deepa, who has seen Sid and Sameer]
Deepa: [excitedly] Hey, guys! Where is Akash?
Sid: Akash? Umm... [points] there! Behind that tree.
[Akash and Shalini are sitting next to each other in the plane]
Akash: So, where are you going?
Shalini: ...this flight goes to Sydney
Akash: Okay, but where are you going?
Shalini: Sydney.
Akash: What a coincidence, all three of us are going to Sydney!
Shalini: Three of us?
Akash: Yes. You, me and this flight.
[Akash, Sameer and Sid at Chapora Fort in Goa]
Akash: [sighing] What a beautiful place!
Sameer: Yes, it's beautiful.
Akash: I think we should come here every year, would you agree?
Sameer: Definitely. What do you think, Sid? [Sid does not respond] Where are you lost?
Sid: I'm looking at that ship, which won't be visible soon.
[All three look at the ship]
Sid: You know we three are like that ship, some day we'll set out on our journeys. And maybe, our destinies lead us away from each other.
Sameer: I don't understand why you're saying all this. We're friends, Sid.
Sid: Of course! But who knows where life leads us? Have you ever considered, that we'd be lucky if we meet once in ten years, let alone every year?
Akash Malhotra: That'll never happen, Sid. We were, we are, and will remain friends. Forever.
[Akash and Sameer shake hands]
Sameer: Definitely.
Tara Jaiswal: You guys are probably thinking, "where has Siddharth brought us?"
Sameer: Nope, nothing like that. We'll go anywhere if there's cake.
Akash: You say you're in love with a woman, who is 10-15 years older than you, who has a daughter, who had a husband! You've told us yourself she has a drinking problem. What do you expect?
Sid: Just that, I know all of this and still love her.
Sameer: But Sid, try and think. This isn't love, it's madness.
Sid: No, this is love. I don't expect her to love me back and marry me, and become mine forever. I expect no such thing. And even if she doesn't love me that's okay, because...
Akash: Ahhh... okay! I get it now. [stops to think] Remember, Sameer? Even I started this way.
Sameer: Started? [understands] Oh! Of course.
Akash: Okay, Sid. If that's the case, then no objections! In fact, this is perfect. She's experienced, she lives alone, you visit her everyday. [to Sameer] Learn from him, Sameer. [turning back to Sid] I salute you, Sid. Your choice is absolutely... [Sid slaps Akash]
Sid: How disgusting! I told you I love someone and you made it into a dirty joke. Grow up, Akash! It isn't necessary that we'll tolerate everything about each other. But there is a line in every friendship you should never cross. And you have crossed it today. And you know what, Akash? At some point in life, one experiences true love. At that time, all these things you just said - about her age, and 10-15 years older, and all that - it doesn't matter. It all seems trivial. But I pity you, Akash. You won't understand this today. But some day, you will realise that love isn't something you choose, it just happens.
Akash: [livid] Are you done talking? Let's go, Sameer.
Tara Jaiswal: Siddharth, please go away.
Sid: Please listen to me.
Tara: [angry] I don't want to hear anything. Did I ever make you feel that I loved you, or wanted any kind of relationship with you?
Sid: [calmly] No.
Tara: Then how could you just assume that some relationship was possible? This is the problem with your generation, "anything goes!" Life isn't like that, Siddharth. Today, you've upset both, me and your mother.
Sid: [sighing] Please sit down. Please.
[Tara sits reluctantly]
Sid:I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry that I caused you and mom such pain. I'm sorry you had to hear so much because of me. But it's true that I love you. And I'm not sorry for that. It's also true that I never wanted you to know, because I knew you couldn't understand. I just want to see you happy.
[Tara has no response]
Sid: If knowing the truth has caused you pain today, then just know that it was never my intention. I'm so sorry.
Tara: [softly] Sid, please leave me.
[Sid leaves]
Sameer: [fearfully calling Priya] Hi, Priya? I was... but... listen to me... but you... But I... when... I'm at Akash's place... [call goes dead] Hello? She hung up.
Akash: So, what were you thinking? That she would say 'I'm sorry, darling'? What nonsense, man! There's a limit to everything, Sameer. Tell her that these tantrums won't work. She'll have to do as you say if she wants to be with you. She's challenged your self-respect, bro. What are you doing? Be a man!
Sameer: Yea. Yea! YEAH! You're absolutely right, Akash!
[Sameer leaves for Priya's house]
Akash:: Just give it to her! [after he has left] He's dead today!
Akash: I've chosen not to ruin my life by falling in love.
Shalini: You don't choose to fall in love. It happens.
Akash: Then I won't let it happen.
Shalini: Give it some time. One day it'll happen.
Akash: [pauses] Looks like you're desperately after me!
Sameer: [returns with Priya's drink] Is someone dead?
Akash: Yes. You!
Akash: I am really sorry, Sid. Please forgive me.
Sid: I should apologize, too.
Akash: Maybe next time. It's my turn today.
Sid: You haven't changed at all!
Akash:: Yes. Anyway, it's hard to improve on perfection.
