English: Scanned page of the Babylonian Talmud, showing the first page of the first tractate, Daf "Bet" ב (folio 2a) of the tractate Rosh Hashanah. The center column contains the Talmud text, beginning with a section of Mishnah. The Gemara begins 8 lines down with the abbreviation 'גמ (gimmel-mem) in larger type. Mishnah and Gemara sections alternate throughout the Talmud text. The blocks of text on either side are the Rashi and Tosafot commentaries, printed in Rashi script. The Rashi is always on the side of the page closest to the binding, the right side in this example. Other notes and cross references are in the margins.
