Summary

Description
English: Early U.S. ad sheet for the 1927 German film Metropolis published in 1926 by the film's American distributor, Paramount Pictures. The ad art is far removed from the actual film's German expressionist style and science-fiction setting. The ad copy reads:
"Metropolis"
A mighty, surging drama of the two worlds that
work out their moiling destinies within the confines of
a great city—the gilded palaces of the rich and the shadowy
haunts of the poor. When a millionaire's son meets
a pretty tenement charmer and falls in love with her, the
two worlds clash and a typhoon of riotous emotions, pre-
judices and startling drama is set loose. The rich man's
desperate efforts to lift his ragged Cleopatra from the
poverty and temptations that surround her to the
heights of fashion teach him more about life in the
raw, human sympathy and human courage
than he or you have ever dreamed of!

     "Metropolis" reaches its spectacular climax
when a devastating flood bursts upon the
city. Only love conquers the catastrophe.

Source
English: *Original source: published in the "15th Birthday Group" Paramount Exhibitor Book, which displayed ads for upcoming films for 1926–27.

Permission
(Reusing this file)
English: It is unclear whether the Universal Exhibitor Book 1932–33 was published with a valid copyright notice. Regardless, the copyright for the artwork was not renewed, as was required by American copyright law to extend/maintain protection for works published 1963 or earlier. In order to maintain copyright protection, the poster would have had to be renewed 28 years after publication, in either 1953 or 1954 (see the sections for "Artwork: Original registrations and renewals" and refer to the links to search the copyright catalogs for those years). Because it was not renewed, copyright lapsed at that time. Note that the ad art is a distinct work from the film it represents and had to be renewed separately. Additionally: although the film's country of origin is Germany, this ad originated with the film's American distributor and was first published in the U.S.
