Summary

Description

A simple black-and-white graphic which combines various symbols described or implied in the 1949 semi-classic utopian novel Seven Days in New Crete (or Watch the North-Wind Rise) by Robert Graves, in order to summarize essential features of the goddess-worshipping quasi-matriarchal society detailed in the book. From top to bottom, the symbols are: the Triple Goddess (Nimuë, Mari, and Ana - symbolized by lunar phases of young moon, full moon, and old moon), above the twin rival demi-gods (the star-god of the first half of the year and the serpent-god of the second half of the year), above the people of New Crete in their five social groups or "estates", likened to the five fingers of a hand (thumb - captains, index finger - recorders or scribes, middle finger - commons, ring finger - servants, little finger - poets or magicians), above the clipped coin of Dobeis, the snapped sword of Pill, and the broken gear of Machna.

The Labrys (called labra in the New Cretan language) is also a symbol used in the New Cretan society described in the book (apparently symbolizing authority under the goddess), but couldn't be conveniently included in this image. The symbolic numerology of the New Cretan calendar (e.g. the seven-day week -- five of which are each assigned to one of the "estates", leaving Tuesday and Friday for one-day "wars" and love-affairs -- and the thirteen-month year, etc.) is also omitted...
