Quotes
[edit]- Women live longer than men; and among reputed centenarians also the ratio is much in favour of that popularly said to be the weaker sex; out of 691 reputed centenarian deaths during the ten years 1910-1919 inclusive, 504, or 73 per cent., were females, and 187, or 27 per cent., males. In 1923 the numbers were 74 females and 22 males.

- In 1814 Dyer, the friend of Charles Lamb, expressed the opinion general at the time by the statement that Cambridge had never been considered the proper place for medical or anatomical students, who ought to go to some great city such as London or Edinburgh. But Haviland's appointment to the Regis chair in 1817, at the early age of thirty-two, was followed by changes which led up to the epoch-making reforms and advances that characterized the nineteenth century as regards the medical school. In 1819 he began a course of fifty lectures a year on special and general pathology and clinical medicine.

In the same year Eugen Baumann, apparently quite independently of Kocher's suggestion, investigated the chemistry of the thyroid on the advice of Kraske and was much surprised to find iodine ...

Quotes about Humphry Rolleston
[edit]- Written for physicians by a physician about a physician, this is, in all probability, the best medical biography of the year. ... In less than 300 pages, Sir Humphry Rolleston contrives to tell all that is known of this long life, a quiet and uneventful one, be it said, and difficult to relate by reason of the utter lack of early records; for Allbutt, his biographer tells us, "kept very few records, did not write a diary or leave any unpublished reminiscences, and very few of his early contemporaries are now alive."
