[two friends are piloting an airliner]
Dave Campbell: OK, son, take it.
Eddie O'Rourke: Is it hard, daddy?
Dave Campbell: Nothing of the sort.
Eddie O'Rourke: Well, what do I do first?
Dave Campbell: Just fiddle around, it'll come to you.
Holman: [Eddie returns to the White House] What are you doing here?
Eddie O'Rourke: I was invited. I've got a right to be here. More so in fact.
Dave Campbell: Wake up Jean.
Jean Campbell: Why? What is it?
Dave Campbell: Eddie wants you to undress a girl for him.
Dave Campbell: [while Jean is crying and hugging Eddie] Tears. I didn't get any of that. I'm just the husband. I got a kiss on the cheek.
Jean Campbell: They're going away to the Army to be flyers.
Eddie O'Rourke: Now Jean, you knew it. You went with us when we signed up.
Jean Campbell: I know, but I didn't think they'd take you. I thought you might have some disease!
[at a drugstore, Eddie O'Rourke and Maria can be seen drinking sodas]
Eddie O'Rourke: Where'd you learn to speak French?
Princess Maria: How do you know I can?
Eddie O'Rourke: You were speaking it last night.
Princess Maria: What did I say?
Eddie O'Rourke: I don't know, I couldn't understand you. Part of the time, you thought you were in Paris.
Princess Maria: I did.
Eddie O'Rourke: Have you traveled in Europe a lot?
Princess Maria: I was born there, I didn't come to this country until recently.
Eddie O'Rourke: How do you speak English?
Princess Maria: I had a very good education. My family insisted I know languages.
Eddie O'Rourke: [deadpan] I see.
[Princess Maria and Eddie O'Rourke can be seen arriving at the apartment of Jean and Dave Campbell. When they reach the door, Eddie rings the bell before looking at Maria]
Eddie O'Rourke: Don't expect anything out of the ordinary.
Princess Maria: [smiles] I won't.
Princess Maria: Hello, Uncle.
Holman: Where have you been?
Princess Maria: I've been sleeping.
Holman: Where have you been sleeping, Maria?
Princess Maria: I took too many pills. The plane turned around and came back.
Holman: I found that out. Where did you sleep, Maria?
Princess Maria: At the airport.
Holman: At the airport?
[Holman looks at the G-Man, who appears confused]
G-Man: That's impossible. I must've gone through the airport twenty times.
Holman: Where at the airport?
Princess Maria: In the ladies' lounge.
[Holman looks at the G-Man, who shrugs and gives him an innocent look]
G-Man: Ladies' lounge.
Holman: Thank you.
G-Man: Yes, sir.
G-Man: I'm glad you're safe, Your Highness.
Princess Maria: Thank you.
[the G-Man turns and walks off as Maria heads towards a door]
Holman: Your Highness all night in a ladies' lounge. Maria, sometimes I wonder if you realize your position.
Princess Maria: I'd like to take a bath uncle.
Holman: How do you feel?
Princess Maria: I'm alright.
Holman: Maybe you've got a cold coming on or something.
Princess Maria: No, Uncle.
Mr. Washburn: Your position in the royal family is most important. You're to have children. If possible, boys.
Eddie O'Rourke: Well, that's not a full day's work. What else do I do?
Mr. Washburn: Nothing else.
Eddie O'Rourke: Nothing?
Mr. Washburn: Nothing.
Mr. Washburn: The next is merely you giving up your American citizenship.
Eddie O'Rourke: What's that?
Mr. Washburn: You give up your American citizenship.
Eddie O'Rourke: That's it. Why?
Holman: It's customary in our family.
Eddie O'Rourke: It's not customary in my family.
Holman: Your family?
Eddie O'Rourke: Yes, I've got a family. I didn't grow on a bush.
Holman: I don't like your tone of voice, young man.
Eddie O'Rourke: I can't help that.
Holman: You'll apologize, and immediately.
Eddie O'Rourke: Or?
Holman: Or? Or, there'll be no marriage.
Eddie O'Rourke: I was just coming to that.
Holman: What's that?
Eddie O'Rourke: I'm not marrying "her highness."
Holman: You're not marrying her highness?
Mr. Washburn: Let's not be hasty. Perhaps we should discuss this alone.
Eddie O'Rourke: No, it's better this way. I'm not giving up any American citizenship. I've never gotten over how lucky I was to be born here in the first place. And I didn't ask any "highness" to get married. I asked a girl I thought was a homeless refugee who was getting a job as an upstairs maid. And I thought other things about her, too. You'd be surprised what I thought.
Holman: This man is demented.
Eddie O'Rourke: I couldn't take an allowance from my wife and I couldn't ask you for permission to leave the room. I wasn't raised that way. But even that's not important. But what do I say to my kid when he asks me what I did in the war. You know what I have to say? Son, there was a big fight, the biggest fight the world was ever in, the most important. But I couldn't make it. I was at a flower show. I'd be ashamed of myself. And I thought that you were ashamed when you had to tell those woman that you couldn't sew or knit or cook or anything but you could learn something. Even knitting a sweater helps. And if it's knit badly, I'll wear it just the same. You knit and I'll fly an airplane. What do you say, Mary?
Holman: Don't you dignify him with an answer.
Eddie O'Rourke: I want you to marry me.
Holman: You heard me, Maria.
Eddie O'Rourke: I'm crazy about you, Mary.
Holman: Maria!
Eddie O'Rourke: He can't do anything after we're married. We'll have a lot of fun, Mary, if we love each other.
Holman: Maria, our family goes back 1200 years.
Eddie O'Rourke: That's overrated, Mary. Mine goes back to Adam and Eve.
[following their marriage, Princess Maria and Eddie O'Rourke can be seen leaving the White House. As they leave, they stop to put on some shoes]
Eddie O'Rourke: It was wonderful of them to do that. But I'm worried.
Princess Maria: Why?
Eddie O'Rourke: Well, I know that Supreme Court Judge can't get into any trouble. He's got a life job; they can't fire him. And Mr. Washburn's a pretty big man in the State Department. He's alright. But that guard, who was watching, that I bumped into, he may get into trouble.
[Maria smiles at Eddie]
Princess Maria: That wasn't a guard you bumped into. That was the President.
[Eddie begins to process what was just spoken to him.]
Eddie O'Rourke: The President? Holy Mackerel! I tipped him a buck, and he took it...
Princess Maria: Come.
[the two of them walk off as a light goes out in a window in the White House.]
