Dialogue
[edit]Turnabout Intruder [X.01]
[edit]- Spock: I never cease to be struck by what passion and emotion drive humans to. What they cause you to become.
- Kirk: Yes... Sometimes, I almost envy you, Mr. Spock. Almost.
You've Got the Conn [X.02]
[edit]- Chekov: [regarding the Captain's chair] Is it... comfortable?
- Sulu: Mm?
- Chekov: Because it looks... comfortable.
- Uhura: You know, the best starship in the fleet will be the first one commanded by a woman.
- Kirk: [to Uhura] I can't imagine a better female captain. Some day. If I know anything, I know you have what it takes to command. [to Chekov and Sulu] And so do you, and you. Your ships will have the finest captains in the fleet because I know I've got the finest crew in the fleet.
Happy Birthday, Scotty [X.03]
[edit]- McCoy: I'm a doctor, not a sniper!
- Scotty: Well some day, you may need to be both.
Pilgrim of Eternity [1.01]
[edit]- Scotty: [referring to the prototype Holodeck] Was she everything I promised, sir?
- Kirk: And more... I've never seen a holographic program this detailed before. I swear I can almost smell the gun oil!
- Scotty: Aye, well she's still in the experimental stage, but once we get the bugs out...
- Apollo: "Sleep dwell upon thine eyes, peace in thy breast. Would I were sleep and peace so sweet to rest." Travel gently, beloved Athena.
- [As Athena dies, she fades from Apollo's arms.]
- Uhura: Where did she go?
- Apollo: I don't know. Emptiness...
- Kirk: [Nothing] has changed. We can't give you the worship you want.
- Apollo: Much has changed; I no longer seek it. Time, who never dared to speak my name, now pursues me. Does that surprise you -- even please you -- to know I fear passing into oblivion?
- Spock: Captain, if our objective is to determine Apollo's true intentions, perhaps it is time we -- what is the saying -- "give him enough rope"?
- Kirk: Something like that.
- Apollo: Your history tapes show how humans have evolved as a species, yet your Federation's promise of compassion and benevolence seem little more than words!
- Kirk: Is that all you learned from our history?
- Apollo: Even through the centuries, music still echoes in my mind. The battles, heroes, bravery, love... To love a mortal was to watch the sun rise on a perfect day... Only to mourn too quickly its setting into eternal night.
- Dr. McKennah: In each of us, there's the potential to do great things and to do dangerous and unpredictable things. How is Apollo any different?
- Kirk: Well the last time I checked, neither you nor I were ever worshiped as gods. I'd call that a big difference.
- [Apollo has trapped Kirk, levitating him in the middle of the Enterprise's corridors.]
- Kirk: Is this a preview of what you intend to do to some unsuspecting planet? Well you'll never get there and you'll die alone! Is that what you want?!
- Apollo: I want what is mine -- humanity's worship and love!
- Kirk: Humanity never loved you! They feared you! No god should survive on fear!
- Apollo: Enough! Receive the wage of your blasphemy!
- Spock: It has been my experience that humans, if not most beings, are unable to change their behaviors that are deeply embedded by choice. It is often forced by tragedy or outside intervention.
- Kirk: Well, Apollo's therapy will not be at the expense of the crew of the Enterprise, I can promise you that. Apparently, you can't teach an old god new tricks.
- Kirk: Apollo learned what it took our respective peoples centuries to discover. Self-sacrifice is the best way to live, benefiting both the giver and the receiver.
- McCoy: Now if I had an entire culture worshiping at my feet on bended knee, I'm not so sure I'd be in a hurry to change things either.
Lolani [1.02]
[edit]- Spock: "Jinx", Captain?
- Kirk: "Jinx", Mr. Spock. It's something people used to shout when they said the same thing at the same time.
- Spock: Indeed. The lifeform could not be confirmed as Telarite but, knowing the volatile nature of that species, I would reccomend...
- Kirk and Spock: Caution.
- Spock: Jinx?
- Kirk: See, you've got it already.
- Kirk: First, men are slaves to the women, then the women slaves to the men...
- McCoy: Why does anyone have to be a slave to anyone?
- Lolani: What a beautiful ship! And men and women working alongside each other equally...
- Dr McKennah: Well, the Federation sees no difference between the rights and abilities of men and women.
- Lolani: But biologically and chemically, we're different. One gender isn't stronger than the other?
- Dr McKennah: We're each individuals with our own strengths and weaknesses, but we're not defined by our gender.
- Lolani: It sounds like a dream -- one I've had many a night.
- Dr McKennah: It's a good dream, Lolani. One worth holding on to.
- Kirk: I brought you a book -- you said on the bridge that you read, I thought you might enjoy it.
- Lolani: A gift. Thank you -- what's it about?
- Kirk: It's about a once-great Earth civilization that collapsed from within due to its own moral decay.
- Lolani: That sounds like something that could happen on Orion.
- Kirk: It could happen in any culture where people forget the ideals that made them great.
- Spock: We are not diplomats, Lolani. We do not have the authority to--
- Lolani: To do what? To make a difference in the unbearable hell that is the slave trade on my planet? Well I could! I could be the voice for women who have none! Not if you send me back in chains.
- Kenway: Captain Kirk is a good man! But he can't disobey Starfleet orders, he'd lose his command!
- Lolani: I read once, "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing". Can you let that happen?
- Kenway: How can someone like me prevent it?
- Lolani: Someone like you?
- Kenway: I hate what's happening to you and those on your planet, but what can I do about it? What can I do? I'm nobody!
- Lolani: If I've learnt anything, it's everyone is someone. That's the message that needs to reach others like me. I feel like I'm screaming and no one can hear me!
- Kenway: I hear you! I hear you...
- Zaminhon: The Orions never care to chronicle our history in great detail.
- Dr McKennah: How do you ever expect to learn from it?
- Zaminhon: [Orion females] are next to animals without us.
- Kirk: Now that I understand. Take Dr. McKennah here. She's obstinate when she doesn't get her own way. She certainly benefits from my guidance as a man. I'm wondering... How much would you pay for her?
- Zaminhon: Excuse me?
- Kirk: How much is she worth? She could be your 219th...
- Zaminhon: No, I couldn't put a price on it! This woman's educated, refined, civilized. Slavery is not for her kind.
- Kirk: But she challenges me, Zaminhon. She questions my authority on and on...
- Zaminhon: Captain, don't be unreasonable! She's clearly learned and capable.
- Kirk: And what about Lolani? She's as learned and capable as any Starfleet officer. Animals do not thirst for knowledge and strive to better themselves. She's consumed a wealth of learning as you've consumed your food, Zaminhon. She's not a slave! She's a woman. And even without the knowledge, education, beauty, talent, she is still a woman with a fundamental right to be free!
- Kirk: All hands, this is the Captain. I'm about to violate a direct order from Starfleet Command. I take full responsibility for this action, and my log will reflect that none of the crew are complicit. Many of you had the opportunity over the last few days to meet the young Orion girl that was aboard. Her name was "Lolani".
- Lolani: If you've found this recording, it means I have failed. I am dead. I do not wish for my life to end this way, but I thought it was the only means left to send a message to those who enslave others. My death will mean nothing. But perhaps Zaminhon's death will light a fire in my people and their allies and do not act. The message of hope must go on. It must reach Orion. Thousands of young Orion girls are longing, desperate to live free. To dream. To fly. It is obvious I will not be the one to carry that message, though I pray another will. If we remain silent to the cruelties that surround us, we will lose a part of ourselves. The part that feels, that stands up for injustice -- the part that loves. May this not be the end, but a beginning... Freedom, at all costs.
Fairest of Them All [1.03]
[edit]- Spock: It has begun.
- Uhura: What has?
- Spock: Revolution, Lieutenant. Revolution...
- Marlena Moreau: What's wrong?
- Kirk: I'll tell you what's wrong. What's wrong has pointed ears and has a knack for insubordination!
- Spock: When you were in the other reality, what did you see?
- Scotty: I, um... I saw weakness, commander!
- Spock: Perhaps what you saw was peace. Is that possible, Mr. Scott?
- Kirk: Take a team to Auxillary Control. Apprehend Mr. Spock and Lt. Commander Scott. Lethal force is authorized.
- Sulu: Lethal force, Captain? There'll likely be casualties, on both sides.
- Kirk: Then take Chekov and put him in front!
- Spock's Recording: Attention crew of the ISS Enterprise, this is First Officer Spock. By now, you aware of the annihilation of the peaceful Halkan people. This action has served only to hasten the fall of the Terran Empire. A civilization built upon a legacy of violence and terror cannot survive. The time has come to embrace a new vision. A vision of equality. Of morality. Of galactic peace. A philosophy based upon infinite diversity... infinite combinations. This future is within our reach, but not under our present command. Join me. Together, we shall be the architects of our own future.
- Kirk: Spock. You can't win. What's your next move, kill me? Take command of the Enterprise? There are a dozen starships out there, all loyal to the Empire.
- Spock: As am I. But the Empire as it stands today is at a crossroads. Eventually, all kings are vulnerable.
- Spock: Captain Kirk. The future is coming. You are the past. I offer this crew an alternative.
- Kirk: This crew... This crew?! They don't need alternatives. They're pawns. Pawns need a king! They serve for my conquests. My victories! You think they're smart enough to follow you? They're mine. I can use them, break them, send them to their own slaughter and they'll thank me for it!
- Kirk: You won't get away with this, Spock. You're just one man!
- Spock: In every revolution, there is one man with a vision.
- Kirk: Who told you that?
- Spock: You did.
- Kirk: SPOCK...!
- Spock: James T. Kirk chose his path. It is time we chose ours. Warp Two, ensign.
- Chekov: Heading, sir?
- Spock: Forward.
The White Iris [1.04]
[edit]- Beginning Text: Dedicated to the fond memory of Leonard Nimoy who in our hearts will LIVE FOREVER AND PROSPER.
- Kirk: I don't need a shrink, Bones.
- McCoy: You don't know what you need.
- Kirk: Well apparently, neither do you, doctor! [beat] I'm sorry, Bones. That... That was unnecessary.
- McCoy: But not inaccurate. You're right, Jim. I don't know why this is happening. But I'll be damned if you're gonna tell me nothing's wrong in that stubborn head of yours!
- McCoy: And here I thought Vulcans were a people of science.
- Spock: To be a people of science is to acknowledge that, sometimes, science points to something more. Vulcans are also a people of spirit. The two are not as contradictory as people assume.
- Kirk: Duty first. Always "duty first". It comes at a price. Do you think I loved those women, Bones?
- McCoy: I think you've loved a lot of women, Jim. [off Kirk's look] Sorry.
- Kirk: The answer is "yes". On another ship... an alien planet, another time... wherever I found them, I lost them. I've never been able to let it go.
- McCoy: Jim, I... I didn't know. You've always...
- McCoy: Kept it buried. Hidden. Command has no room for such indulgences.
Divided We Stand [1.05]
[edit]Come Not Between the Dragon [1.06]
[edit]Embracing the Winds [1.07]
[edit]Still Treads the Shadow [1.08]
[edit]What Ships Are For [1.09]
[edit]- Galisti: Friends, the Hyalini offer their heartfelt gratitude. Today is the beginning of a bright new future for all of my people. We...
- Kirk: Some.
- Galisti: I beg your pardon?
- Kirk: Today is a bright new future for some of your people. For others, it may be the beginning of the end. There are Abecians among you -- many of them. If we repair your sun, you'll see for yourself.
- Galisti: You would have us doubt our resolve. Would the captain hold our salvation hostage? Refusing to launch the stellar probe until you've had the final word? Is that your plan?
- Kirk: No. But... it's a pretty good one. I think I'll borrow it. I wonder if you realize the peace, prosperty, the unity of your people is truly extraordinary.
- McCoy: You've accomplished in a few short centuries what took our people millennia.
- Spock: Indeed, Council Leader. Such is the fact with many worlds we encounter.
- Kirk: Your people were unified... transformed by the hope that, one day, they would be worthy enough to join the community of the stars. The Hope of the Hyalini. How will your people know when they've achieved worthiness? What does it mean to be "worthy"? Well, that's the problem; there is no one answer. An undefined finish line means you never have to finish! Your people will never have to leave the safety -- the comfort -- of what they know. There's an old saying: "A ship in the harbor is safe. But that's not what ships are for." The greatest fear of all is the fear of the unknown. Will you let that fear define you? Hide behind weapons and barriers? Vilify strangers? The very people that your Hope calls upon you to strive to embrace? Do you serve the Hope? Or have you twisted it to serve you? There comes a moment in the life of every world when its people must choose whom they wish to become. This is your moment.
