Chapter One: The Crawl [5.01]
[edit]- Vecna: At long last... we can begin. You and I... we are going to do such beautiful things together, William. Such beautiful things.
- Jonathan: Have you forgotten what he showed Nancy? Hawkins on fire. Karen, Holly, everyone -- dead!
- Steve: Yeah, man, he also showed Max her brother walking around with a big hole in his chest. That's what he does; he gets in your head and he tries to scare you.
- Nancy: Yeah, well he did a good job, because I am scared! And you should be scared too, because if he's still out there, he's planning to end our world, so...
- Mike: ...we don't stop looking, even if it takes a hundred more crawls -- a thousand! We don't stop until we're goddamn sure that wrinkled, rotting, noseless bastard is dead and gone and never coming back. [He holds out his hand.] Everyone in?
- [Everyone joins save Dustin. Mike looks to him.]
- Dustin: I wanna see Vecna's heart on a platter. Just wish I could do it myself. For Eddie.
- The Party: For Eddie!
- Lucas: On three, "Kill Vecna". One, two, three...
- The Party: Kill Vecna!
- Dr. Kay: Don't worry, it doesn't bite. It does, on occasion, strangle.
- Mike: We find Vecna and we end this once and for all.
- Eleven: And then what happens?
- Mike: You mean after you totally demolish Vecna? In my campaigns if the party wins, then they all live happily ever after.
- Eleven: Happily how?
- Mike: Well, usually what happens is, the party doesn't return to their local village because too much has happened. They've seen too much, so they travel to a far-away land -- a peaceful land, somewhere beautiful with, like, three waterfalls or something and they all start again, together.
- Eleven: Do you think that could be real, for us?
- Mike: Yeah, of course! I mean, not the three waterfalls part, but the other stuff, yeah! Of course. If Vecna's gone, then what's stopping us?
Chapter Two: The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler [5.02]
[edit]- Nancy: This is our fault. This is all our fault.
- Mike: We got there as fast as we could.
- Nancy: I’m not talking about tonight. We could have acted yesterday, last week, last fall. We could have tried to get them out of Hawkins or… or at least told them the truth! We could have done something, anything!
- Mike: We couldn’t have known any of this would happen.
- Nancy: Do you really believe that, Mike?
- Mike: After all this time, it comes for Holly? Holly, who has nothing to do with any of this. It makes no goddamn sense.
- Nancy: It makes perfect goddamn sense. Vecna told me this would happen. He showed me. And not just the four gates. Holly, Mom, Dad dead. And we just chose not to believe him. But now it’s all coming true. Like, don’t you get it, Mike? Vecna’s come back to realize his vision, to punish us. He did it with Fred and Chrissy and Max and now it’s our turn. And he’s not gonna stop. He’s not gonna stop until we’re drained of every last ounce of suffering.
- Jonathan: I just thought that, tonight of all nights, you would give it a rest.
- Steve: Give what a rest?
- Jonathan: This bullshit macho competition for Nancy's affection.
- Steve: What are you talking about?
- Jonathan: What am I talking about?
- Steve: Yeah.
- Jonathan: Really? Dude, ever since I got back from Lenora, you are constantly showing off for her. How you’re better than me. Which is shitty enough on a normal day, but now her parents are fighting for their lives, her sister is missing, and all you can think about is giving her flowers. You selfish, chauvinistic meathead!
- Steve: You know what, Byers? You're totally right. Me worrying about my good friend, my friend, that makes me the selfish one here. Or maybe, just maybe, you're the problem, dude. Ever since you got back, you've been acting like a paranoid pothead weirdo. And maybe if you stopped focusing on me and started focusing on her, maybe then the two of you would finally be happy. Because right now, the only one who's more miserable in that relationship than you... is Nance!
- Lucas: [to Max] I wish I... I had better news. [machine beeps] Hopefully my next update will be something like El and Hop saved Holly, and killed Vecna, and everyone's back home celebrating and everything. But if I've learned anything over the years... it's never gonna be that easy. [somber music playing] El's amazing. But she can't do this alone. She's gonna need all the help she can get. She's going to need the Party, the full Party. Which is why I'm here. The final battle... I feel like it started tonight. And Max, we can't win this without you. If my theory is right, we're running out of time. So if you're planning on resurrecting anytime soon, now... now is the time. Even a sign would be enough to show me you're still in there. Online TV streaming services Please, Max. Please. Wake up. Just... something. I miss you.
- Robin: You got an antenna in your head, use it. The Enigma machine won the war. Knowledge is power. So...
- Will: So... So, you want to...
- Robin: Skip school, play hooky, connect your brain into an interdimensional monster's signal, and save little Wheeler? Yeah, kind of. I mean, your mom is gonna be raging mad, and she's probably right. It is super dangerous, but...
- Will: Isn't everything we do super dangerous?
- Hopper: And you got there how, exactly?
- Eleven: Get where?
- Hopper: The Wheeler house. Did you take the Henderson shelter?
- Eleven: No. Nancy drove me.
- Hopper: Nancy drove you?
- Eleven: Yes.
- Hopper: We don't drive ever, do we? Do we?
- Eleven: No.
- Hopper: No, we take the tunnels, and we don't surface until it's clear, until it's safe.
- Eleven: I wore my hoodie.
- Hopper: Oh, well, geez, that's great. I don't know what we've been crawling around in the mud all this time. We should've just drove you around in your hoodie.
- ...
- Hopper: You're more like me than I'd like to admit.
- Eleven: What, a stubborn punk-ass?
- Hopper: You heard that?
- Eleven: You talk loud.
- Hopper: Yeah, I guess I am a stubborn punk-ass. Or at least I was. I never listened to my pops either. Always thought I knew best. Pissed him right off. I remember one day it got so heated, he took me to the recruitment office. He made me enlist right there. He thought the Army would do me some good. Give me some structure, some discipline. But the thing was, I thought I was smarter than the officers.
- Eleven: Were you?
- Hopper: Sometimes. But mostly, no, I was just dumb. Naive. I used to trust my gut and my instinct. Never... Like you. Did a lot of crazy things in that war. Reckless things. You might call them brave, but there's a fine line between bravery and stupidity. Saw a lot of brave men die in that war. Friends of mine. My daughter... Sara. She was brave. Bravest person I ever knew. She stared death in the face. She never got scared. She never wavered. Fought her heart out. The doctors said they never saw anything like it. They thought she was gonna make it, too.
- Eleven: So that's why you don't want me in here. Because you think Vecna will win and I will die.
- Hopper: I don't think... I don't think anything. I've just been around long enough to know that you can't count on anything in this life. I don't wanna lose you. I won't. Which is why whatever happens from here on out, wherever this blood leads, I need you to do what I say.
- Eleven: So don't be a stubborn punk-ass like you?
- Hopper: Yeah, don't be a stubborn punk-ass.
- Holly: Are the others here yet?
- Mr. Whatsit: No, not yet.
- Holly: You will save them, too, won’t you? Save them from the monsters?
- Mr. Whatsit: Yes, Holly. Don’t you worry. I’m going to save your friends. Every last one of them.
- Holly: And my family? Are they coming too?
- Mr. Whatsit: [revealed to be Henry] Your friends first. Then after, I’ll save your family too, of course. I have room for everyone here.
Chapter Three: The Turnbow Trap [5.03]
[edit]- Joyce: I told, I explicitly told you, I didn't want him going anywhere that's not safe. And not only did you take him, you cut off all communication.
- Robin: Yes, I mean, in retrospect, that was a bit inconsiderate.
- Joyce: Inconsiderate?
- Robin: We really should've left a note.
- Joyce: Is this funny to you?
- Robin: Oh. Sorry. It must be my tone. My mother says I sound perpetually insincere.
- Joyce: Okay, this is my son’s life you’re playing with. My son. So next time I say I do not want him leaving my side, that means I don’t want him leaving my goddamn side.
- Will: I’m right here, Mom. You know, you can talk to me, right? And I’m not a kid anymore.
- Joyce: Will, I am still your mother.
- Will: Doesn’t mean you know what you’re doing.
- Joyce: What?
- Will: Your plan? It… It sucked. I’m sorry, but it did. You only liked it because it was safe, but we don’t have time for safe, not anymore. We have to act, and we have to take risks, and thank God we did. Because my plan, it… it actually worked. I spied on Vecna and tapped back into the hive mind, and we found out that Holly was just the beginning. Vecna's gonna take more kids. I don’t know why or what he wants to do with them, but now we know something we can use against him, his next target. So next time you order me to stay by your side, I wouldn’t count on it.
- Henry: You still thinking about your parents?
- Holly: Yeah.
- Henry: They are in the very best possible hands, Holly, I assure you. And I’m told that they are improving with each hour that passes. As soon as they’re healed, they’ll join us here.
- Holly: I… I know. It’s just…
- Henry: You wish to be with them. I understand. But you cannot offer them comfort in Hawkins, Holly. The only comfort they have is knowing you are here, safe. With me. Safe from the monsters. I thought blackberries might cheer you up a little. They’re your favorite, aren’t they?
- Holly: How did you know? That they’re my favorite?
- Henry: Oh, it’s, uh… It’s just a hunch. I’m good with hunches. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll make chocolate chip pancakes. He loves those.
- Holly: Who does?
- Henry: Your classmate, Derek.
- Holly: Derek is coming here?
- Henry: You don’t like Derek very much, do you? Should I just let the monsters eat him?
- Holly: No. No, you can’t… you can’t do that.
- Henry: Well, how about this? I will tell Derek that if he misbehaves, or if he hurts you in any way, I will send him right back, and he can face those monsters on his own. How does that sound? [chuckles]
- [outside]
- Henry: I expect to be gone most of the day. While I’m out, you’ll have the whole house all to yourself.
- Holly: The whole house?
- Henry: Everything which is mine is yours. But in return, I need you to promise me one thing. Something very important. Do you think you can do that?
- Holly: Yeah.
- Henry: You must never, under any circumstance, go out into the woods. Do you understand?
- Holly: Is that where the monsters live?
- Henry: [nods] But they won’t find you. That is, as long as you don’t–
- Holly: Don’t try to find them.
- Henry: You know, I’m very glad I saved you first. You’re the brightest of them all. Oh, and if you don’t mind, bring my mail in, won’t you?
- [Holly opens the mailbox and finds a Tiffany album and a cassette player]
- Holly: [laughs] How did you know?
- Henry: A hunch.
- Murray: Some sparkling new spark plugs for Bilbo Baggins.
- Dustin: Spark plugs, that's it?
- Murray: I'm also giving out free hugs.
- Dustin: You didn't get the turbochargers?
- Murray: No.
- Dustin: The suspension kit?
- Murray: No.
- Dustin: The aerodynamic spoiler?
- Murray: No.
- Dustin: It wasn't a goddamn Christmas list, Murray.
- Murray: That's exactly what it was. And the fact that Santa Murray scrounged all this up in a single afternoon and smuggled it into what is likely the most heavily secured location outside of the White House, Fort Knox and Area 51 is a goddamn Christmas miracle. So, count your blessings, hang some mistletoe, pucker up, and kiss my jolly ass!
- Dustin: Thank you for the spark plugs.
- Mike: This isn't about saving Derek. It's about saving Holly. Vecna took her. And yeah, now he's after Dipshit Derek. But we have a plan. A plan to both save Dipshit Derek and find Holly. But the plan is... It's a bit insane. But after it's over, I don't think Tina's gonna wanna talk to you ever again.
- Erica: Well, why the hell didn't you just start with that?
Chapter Four: Sorcerer [5.04]
[edit]- Dr. Kay: Eleven. I have been looking for you for a very long time. My name is...
- Eleven: Dr. Kay. I know who you are. I know who you've taken. And I also know... that you and your men... are going to die.
- Robin: Mr. Whatsit is a very bad guy! He sent the monsters after you!
- Derek: SUCK MY FAT ONE!
- Robin: Jesus, what?
- Derek: Mr... Whatsit?
- Will: His real name is Henry.
- Robin: AKA Vecna.
- Erica: AKA One.
- Derek: That's too many names.
- Max: I'm sorry for scaring you. I haven't seen anyone in... a really long time, so... I guess I got excited. [treating Holly's wound] Good news is, it doesn't look that deep. Not enough for stitches. I bet it stings though, huh? [Holly looks nervous] You can talk to me, you know. I won't bite. You do remember me, right? I've been to your house. Like, a lot.
- Holly: You're Max. [Max nods] Max Mayfield. You skateboard and never take off your Walkman.
- Max: That's me.
- Holly: But-
- Max: How am I in here when I'm in a coma in Hawkins General? That's a very reasonable question. [they hear a noise and turn] We should get going. It's not safe here, come on. [they walk through the woods]
- Holly: Where are we going?
- Max: My home.
- Holly: Well, I can't go far. I came here to meet Henry. Do you know Henry?
- Max: Yeah, you could say that.
- Holly: Well, he left me this note. Here, see? And he told me to meet him right here at the X. Right here. I think he's in trouble with the monsters.
- Max: Henry is a lot of things, but in trouble with the monsters is not one of them.
- Holly: No but look, the note says-
- Max: Holly I know what the note says.
- Holly: Then how do you know he's not in trouble?
- Max: Holly.
- Holly: He said hurry!
- Max: Holly, I know what the note says because Henry didn't write it! I did.
- Holly: I don't... I don't understand.
- Max: I'm sorry. I didn't want to lie. I- I just... I had to make sure that you came here.
- Holly: You're one of them, aren't you?
- Max: One of what?
- Holly: The monsters.
- Max: Do I look like a monster?
- Holly: Well I don't know. Maybe you're in disguise. You're dressed weird, and you're in a coma.
- Max: Okay... Well, would a monster know that your brother tried to get a mohawk until your sister stopped him, saving him from possibly the greatest social humiliation that a freshman has ever experienced at Hawkins High?
- Holly: What color was this mohawk?
- Max: Hot orange. And personally, I think the use of the word "hot" is a bit ironic, but... people say I'm too negative. I just think I'm honest.
- Mike: Are you positive you didn't?
- Will: Didn't what?
- Mike: Turn off the scary movie. Protect your mom, not the other way around. I mean, no offense, I know she's badass and everything but, you know.
- Will: Yeah, she's five foot three.
- Mike: Yeah. And Vecna likes to control the hive mind like a puppet master. So maybe when you tap into the hive, you can pull the strings too.
- Will: Except, I'm not Vecna.
- Mike: You sorta are.
- Will: You're trying to say that I'm evil and hell-bent on destroying the world?
- Mike: [sarcastic] Totally. No, I'm just saying that, you know, you're like a wizard like him.
- Will: [smiling] In D&D Mike, not real life.
- Mike: True. In real life, you're more like a sorcerer, because your powers don't come from a book of spells. They're innate.
- Will: Oh. [still smiling]
- Mike: Listen, as far as crazy theories go, I've had crazier. And with Eleven in the Upside Down, we really need some magic up here. [Will playfully shoves him, and Mike walks away. Robin watches meaningfully]
- Robin: Do you, um, by any chance, remember Tammy Thompson?
- Will: Yeah. Isn’t she that terrible singer?
- Robin: [laughs] Yeah. But in the ninth grade, I thought that she sounded like Whitney goddamn Houston. I mean, the first time I saw her, oh my God, like, time slowed down. It was like a scene from some lameo movie. You know, her hair blew in the wind, and she just looked perfect. So goddamn perfect. And, uh, it was right then and there that I knew she was the one. That with Tammy, I would finally be able to be myself, you know, all of myself. Because there was always this part of me that kind of scared me, you know? But I thought that if Tammy loved me, all of me, you know, I wouldn’t be so scared anymore. And then he showed up, Steve “The Hair” Harrington.
- Will: [chuckles] Oh God.
- Robin: You probably can guess the rest. Tammy fell for him hard. And my entire fantasy life with her, along with the rest of my life, pretty much imploded before my eyes. I mean, my grades plummeted. I got grounded. I had to stay home every weekend doing chores. But then one day, I was cleaning bat shit out of my parents’ garage, and I found this 8millimeter film reel. You know? And it was just from this silly movie that I made in fourth grade, but I got it up on the projector, and all of a sudden, I was looking at this little version of myself. And that little me, I could hardly recognize her. You know, she was so carefree and, like, fearless. She just loved every part of herself. And that’s when it hit me. It was never about Tone-deaf Tammy. It was always just about me. I was looking for answers in somebody else, but… I had all the answers. I just needed to stop being so goddamn scared. Scared of… who I really was. Once I did that, oh, I felt so free. It’s like I could fly, you know? Like, I could finally be…
- Will: Rockin’ Robin.
- Robin: Yeah. Rockin’ Robin.
- Derek: If I may interject, officer, I've seen what's coming. And no disrespect meant, but you and your men can't protect shit!
- Vecna: Can you see them… William? Can you see the children? Do you know why? Why I chose them to reshape the world? It’s because they are weak. Weak in body and mind. Easily broken. Easily reshaped. Controlled. The perfect vessels. And you… Will. You were the first. And you broke so easily. You showed me what was possible, what I could achieve. Some minds, it turns out, simply do not belong in this world. They belong in mine.
Chapter Five: Shock Jock [5.05]
[edit]- Steve: You've done some stupid shit in the past, but this? Man, this takes the cake.
- Dustin: You wanna talk to me about dumb shit?! How about chasing after somebody else's girlfriend when the world is ending!
- Steve: Nancy is a friend. She's a friend, okay? Do you remember what that's like, having friends?
- Dustin: Yeah. I do. I remember what it was like to have a good friend. A real friend who actually believed in me and was actually kind to me--
- Steve: A-ha!
- Dustin: What?
- Steve: A-ha.
- Dustin: What?
- Steve: There we go. That's what this has all been about, really, is Eddie. All your bullshit, pushing everyone away? It's because no one could ever be as perfect as he was.
- Dustin: Well, he wasn't perfect, but at least he knew that, unlike you! He was never fake! He didn't care what other people thought about him. He was just himself. And you know what? He was the smartest, kindest person I have ever met! And he would've solved this in thirty seconds flat.
- Steve: Well if I'm such a goddamn idiot, how come I'm the one still standing here?
- Dustin: What the hell is that supposed to mean?
- Steve: That night, I told you not to be heroes. I told both of you. What did Eddie do? He charged into a swarm of killer bats.
- Dustin: To save my life!
- Steve: He saved no one.
- Dustin: He saved everyone!
- Steve: You can keep telling yourself that, Henderson. But deep down, the reason you're so goddamn pissed is because you know the truth! Eddie wanted to play hero and he made a dumb call and he got himself killed!
- Dustin: SHUT UP!
- [Henry catches Derek and tackles him]
- Henry: [menacingly] Who gave you this map?
- Derek: Your-your mom!
- Henry: [shakes him] Look at me! [Derek looks afraid] You lie to me again, and I will kill your fool of a father. [forces Derek to see a vision of his father, dead, with his eyes removed. He does the same with his other family members] Your sneak of a mother, and that bitch of a sister too.
Chapter Six: Escape from Camazotz [5.06]
[edit]- Steve: Henderson! Dustin! Dustin. Hey. What the hell was that? Was that the shield generator? Did they find it?
- Dustin: I was wrong. I was terribly, catastrophically wrong.
- Steve: What?
- Dustin: After you left, I found a journal. Brenner’s journal. The key to destroying that wall is in this lab, but it is not a shield generator. It isn’t dark magic. Vecna didn’t make it. Science did. Theoretical physicists call it exotic matter. A single source of energy that is holding that giant wall together, and I think Nancy just shot it.
- Steve: How is that bad? That’s why we’re here, to get through this wall.
- Dustin: You are not listening!
- Steve: I am listening.
- Dustin: Vecna didn’t make the wall. So he isn’t on the other side, which means Holly and the missing kids aren’t either. Nobody is.
- Steve: Then what the hell is on the other side of that wall? Why’d it stop? Dustin, what’s on the other side of the wall?
- Dustin: Death.
- Henry: [limping towards Max and Holly] Holly!
- Max: Come on! [Holly hyperventilates and they try to run through the labyrinth]
- Henry: [stopping outside of it] Holly, sweetheart. Stop, or I'll hurt her. [Holly freezes] I know you believe Max is your friend. But she has tricked you, Holly. She has corrupted your mind. She is a liar.
- Holly: No! No, you're the liar! I saw you! I saw what you really are! You're a monster! A disgusting monster!
- Henry: Holly! If you don't come back with me right now and rejoin the other children, I will have no choice but to hurt Max. I may even have to kill her.
- Max: Then why don't you? Huh? I'm right here! Oh, that's right. You're too scared of a stupid cave, you goddamn coward!
- Henry: Things have changed, Max. There are now other ways to get to you. And Holly? When your new friend begins to suffer, and she will suffer, you can either return to me and end her suffering, or you can watch your new friend die. Her life is in your hands. [leaves]
- [Steve brings out a ladder]
- Dustin: Steve, what the hell are you doing? That's never gonna work. Stop! Stop! Steve, stop! I'm serious! It's not safe! You're gonna fall!
- Steve: It's unstable! I got it already, okay? [he turns to climb]
- Dustin: No, don't! [grabs him and pulls him back] STOP being an asshole!
- Steve: I'm not being an asshole! I'm trying to get to them, man!
- Dustin: You're always trying to get yourself killed and I can't let it happen again! [sobbing] Stop being so selfish, please, if you go on there, you're gonna die, and I can't deal with it again. You can't die cause I can't deal with it again. Don't let it happen again. Please. Please don't let it happen again. [hugs him] Not you. [still sobbing into Steve's chest] I'm sorry.
- Steve: No, no, no... [they watch the ladder collapse as they hold each other]
- [Jonathan and Nancy are trapped in the melting room, with seemingly no way out]
- Nancy: ...I hate The Clash.
- Jonathan: What?
- Nancy: I hate The Clash. Every time you put them on, I just try to disassociate from reality.
- Jonathan: Yep. I hate reading your articles. You don't actually wanna hear my thoughts, you just want me to tell you they're great.
- Nancy: Because... they are.
- Jonathan: Most of the time.
- Nancy: Most of the- wow. Okay. I... never read "Slaughterhouse-Five." I just read the cliff notes and pretended I like it.
- Jonathan: I never read "Anna Karenina." I just read the cliff notes and pretended I liked it.
- Nancy: You are always exactly six minutes late, and I never say anything, but really, I wanna punch a wall.
- Jonathan: I took your pink sweater to Goodwill.
- Nancy: [incredulous] What? I was looking for that.
- Jonathan: You know I hate pink. But I felt guilty afterwards if that makes you feel better.
- Nancy: I flushed the last bag of Purple Palm Tree Delight down the toilet, and I didn't feel guilty about it after.
- Jonathan: Come on.
- Nancy: I hate it when you're high.
- Jonathan: I hate it when you're drunk.
- Nancy: I hate it most of all when you're high and I'm drunk.
- Jonathan: Me too.
- Nancy: [smiling emotionally] Why do we do that?
- Jonathan: No idea. [they look at each other a moment] I never applied to Emerson.
- Nancy: I know.
- Jonathan: Why didn't you ever say anything?
- Nancy: Why didn't you?
- Jonathan: I'm not sure. [sighs] I just felt like I was... doing something wrong. Like I was going against the natural order of things. You know, with... with what we've been through, it just...
- Nancy: You mean our shared trauma?
- Jonathan: [smiles a little] Yeah. How could anyone else possibly understand? It's like this... this thing that... ties us together forever. You know? It made me feel safe. But also... I don't know.
- Nancy: It can be suffocating.
- Jonathan: Yeah.
- Nancy: That spring break, when you were in Lenora... I didn't really have to stay behind to work. I could have had Fred cover for me. But I think that's why I stayed. That feeling that I just... I needed space.
- Jonathan: Space to be with someone else?
- Nancy: ...Steve's a good guy. He makes me laugh. And, he has better hair than you. [Jonathan laughs] Like way better. But no. No, it was never like that with him. We're just different people. You know what he told me? He wants six kids.
- Jonathan: Six kids?
- Nancy: Six little nuggets.
- Jonathan: [chuckling tearfully] You know that's like a Happy Meal.
- Nancy: [chuckles] But my point is... he knows what he wants, and that's great. But I... don't. And... I guess I was hoping I'd have time to figure that out. But then...
- Jonathan: The world split in four.
- Nancy: And now... and now... [crying]
- Jonathan: Hey... One last confession? A big one. [she nods. He pulls out the CD]
- Nancy: John Coltrane.
- Jonathan: I figure that I've screwed up enough with you. It'd be nice to get something right for once in the end. Here. [she opens it, finding the ring] Nancy Wheeler, will you... not... marry me? [she smiles tearfully] I tried to convince myself that this would somehow fix everything. But it was just gonna make things worse. Which is why it has been sitting like a cannonball in my pocket for the last two days. [she laughs/sobs] So what do you say? Do you accept my un-proposal?
- Nancy: I accept your un-proposal.
- Jonathan: I loved you. I love you, Nancy Wheeler.
- Nancy: I love you, Jonathan Byers. [crying, they press their foreheads together.]
- [Holly and Max reach Max's portal]
- Max: Holly, wait. You can't come with me.
- Holly: What? W-what do you mean?
- Max: This way leads to me, to my body. Not yours. You have to find your own way.
- Holly: How? I don't have Kate Bush. I don't even know who Kate Bush is.
- Max: But you don't need Kate Bush to get out of here. Turns out, I don't either. Music isn't the only way back. You just need something that connects you to the real world, to home. Something powerful, meaningful. Lucas, when- when he took my hand, in the hospital. I could feel it, right here. But then I could also feel it in here.
- Holly: But I don't have a boyfriend.
- Max: You don't need a boyfriend. You just need something that's special to you. Something that makes you feel... safe. Something that brings you strength, something that gives you hope.
- Holly: [reaching for her necklace] Holly the Heroic.
- Max: She's here with you now. But she's also with you in the real world. Wherever you are, all you have to do is follow her home.
- Holly: [crying] How?
- Max: Just... try and remember what it is that she means to you.
- Holly: She doesn't mean anything important. She's just a toy.
- Max: If she's just a toy, why do you always carry her with you?
- Holly: Mike. He said that she had divine powers and that she never gets scared, and so if I ever got scared, I could just... become her. But I keep trying, and it never works. No matter what I do, I'm still me. The girl who needs a stupid night-light. When my mom was attacked, I couldn't save her, I couldn't even save myself. I just stood there. And then when Henry attacked you... I stood there again. There's nothing heroic about that.
- Max: There was nothing that you could do in those moments, Holly. I mean, you're a Wheeler. You're smart. You honestly think that you could've stopped those monsters with a fire poker? [grins] And I think you're leaving a few important things out. The day that we met, you went into the woods even though Henry told you that dangerous monsters lived there. And then you followed me into the cave even though you had no good reason to trust me. And then when I told you to go back to Henry, to go back into danger, you didn't hesitate. And today, when I gave up, you didn't. [crying] I've been here for so long, Holly. So long. And I could never make it out. But you? You found a way through Camazotz. Because of you... I get to see my friends. I get to see Lucas. You saved me, Holly Wheeler. You saved me. So, you see, Holly the Heroic is not just a toy. She's you, Holly. She's you. [they smile at each other, and a portal opens for Holly, back to Vecna's lair]
- Holly: How did you know that would work?
- Max: I didn't. [chuckles] You still have a long journey ahead. I don't know where you're gonna wake up. But I figure Vecna's holding you in the Upside Down. But remember, the Upside Down, it's just like Hawkins. So find your way back to your house and hide there. We will come and find you, okay? [Holly hugs her. Once they pull apart,] I'll see you on the other side.
- Holly: On the other side.
Chapter Seven: The Bridge [5.07]
[edit]- [Max slowly opens her eyes]
- Lucas: Yes! That's it! That's it!
- Max: [weakly] L-Lucas...
- Lucas: Yes, Max. Come on, Max. It's me. It's me. I'm right here. I'm right here, Max. [crying] Are you... are you... are you okay? Do you... do you hurt anywhere?
- Max: [weak] I c-can't feel... much.
- Lucas: Do you... do you feel this? Do you feel my hand? [holds her hand]
- Max: A little.
- Lucas: Can you... can you... can you see?
- Max: The lights are... are really bright.
- Vickie: Hey... you haven't used your eyes, okay, or your muscles for a long time. Okay, your body's just weak, but it just needs to readjust and learn again. [Max cries, as does Lucas] You are going to be okay. You're gonna be okay.
- Lucas: [crying] I knew you were there. I always knew you were still there.
- Max: [crying] I saw you. Waiting for me. Playing my... my song.
- Lucas: You bored of it yet?
- Max: [shakes her head and chuckles tearfully] Are you? [Lucas nods, and they both laugh and cry, as does Robin] It turns out, that this whole time... I didn't even need it. I just needed you. [Lucas smiles and sobs] Just you. [he hugs her]
- Will: I… I… I haven’t told any of you this because… Because I… I don’t… I don’t want you to see me differently. But the truth is… The… The truth is I am. I am different. I just… I just pretended like I wasn’t because… because I didn’t want to be. I wanted to be like everyone else. I wanted to be like my friends and… And I am like you. I’m like you in… in almost every way. We… We like playing D&D late into the night. And we like that old-person smell in Mike’s basement. And we… we like biking to Melvald’s for malted milkshakes. And we like getting lost in the woods, and getting lost in Family Video and arguing about what to rent and settling on Holy Grail for the millionth time. And… And we like Milk Duds in our popcorn with extra butter. And we like drinking Coke with Pop Rocks. And we like bike races and trading comics and NASA and Steve Martin and Lucky Charms and… Literally all the same things. I just… I just… I… I just… I… I… I… I don’t like girls. I mean… I mean I do. Just… Just not like you guys do. And I, uh, I had this… this crush on someone, even though I know… I know they’re not like me. But… But then I realized he’s just my Tammy. And by Tammy, I mean it was never about him. It was… It was about me. And I thought I was finally okay with myself, but… but then today… Today Vecna showed me what would happen if I did this, if I told you guys the truth. He showed me a future, and in this future, some of you are just… are just worried for me. Worried that things will be harder for me. And it just makes me feel like something’s wrong with me. So I… So I push you away. And for the rest of us, we just drift apart more and more and more and more and more until I’m alone. And I know none of that has happened, and Vecna can’t see into the future. But he can see into our minds, and he knows things. And it just felt so real. It felt so real.
- Joyce: Will. You gotta listen to me. That will never ever happen. You’ll never lose me. Ever.
- Will: Okay. Okay.
- Jonathan: And you’ll never lose me. [goes to hug him]
- Lucas: Or me. [goes to hug him]
- Dustin: Or me. [goes to hug him]
- Mike: Or me. [goes to hug him]
- Eleven: Or me. [goes to hug him]
- Robin: Or me.
- [everyone eventually lets go of the hug]
- Robin: Guess you didn’t need truth serum, huh?
- Max: Sorry. This sucks, but you’re gonna have to hug me.
- Will: Oh, Max. [goes to hug her]
- Max: Just imagine I’m hugging you really tight, okay?
- Will: Okay. [lets go of hug] El. I know you’re strong enough to defeat Vecna. But he can retreat to the physical world, and we need to be ready to fight him there too. We have bullets and fire, but none of that helped those soldiers. I need to be there. And I’m ready. I’m ready to show him I’m not afraid anymore.
Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up [5.08]
[edit]- Eleven: If I'm alive, then so is Henry. I have to end the cycle.
- Hopper: You will, you will. But not like this. Not with more violence. Not with more pain. There's already been so much pain. From the moment you were born. Your mother was taken from you. Your childhood was taken from you. You've been attacked. Manipulated by terrible people. Life has been so unfair to you, so cruel. But you never let it break you. And I need you to fight, kid. I need you to fight just one last time. Fight for the days on the other side of this. Fight for... for a world beyond Hawkins. Fight for that day that you have a kid of your own, and you give her the life that you never had. For the day you get so angry because she invites some boy over, and she won't keep the door open three inches. I know. I know you don't believe you can have any of this. But I promise you we will find a way to make it real. You will find a way to make it real. Because you have to. Because you deserve it.
- Henry: It has never controlled me. And I never controlled it. Don’t you see, William? I could have resisted it. But I chose to join it. It needs... me. And I need it. We... are... one.
- Joyce: You fucked with the wrong family!
- Mike: You... You have to get out of there! You have to get out!
- Eleven: None of this will ever end, not if I'm still here.
- Mike: No, no, no. We'll figure something out. We'll figure something out, we'll fight back. We always do.
- Eleven: I need you to talk to the others.
- Mike: No. No, no!
- Eleven: I need you to thank them for me. For being so kind to me. And teaching me what it means to be a friend.
- Mike: No! Please don't do this. Please don't do this!
- Eleven: Mike, I need you to help them understand my choice.
- Mike: But I don't-- I don't understand!
- Eleven: I know. But you will. One day, you will. You understand me. Better than anyone. You always have. From the day we met... you've seen me.
- Mike: Please don't leave me, El. Please don't do this.
- Eleven: I will always be with you. I love you.
- [They kiss.]
- Eleven: Goodbye, Mike.
- Dustin: I just wanted a normal childhood. But that childhood was stolen from me. It was stolen from us. And this past year, if you wanna know the truth, I've been pretty pissed off about it.
- Ted: Language.
- Dustin: But then I thought back to the past six years, and I realized that, even though there was a lot of bad, there was so much good too. There's this game I like to play. It's called Dungeons & Dragons.
- [Will cheers]
- Lucas: Yup!
- Hopper: Jesus Christ.
- Dustin: And in this game, there are two types of chaos classes, chaotic good and chaotic bad. Now, bad chaos brings anarchy, destruction, war. But good chaos can bring innovation, change. And this school... frankly, it needed to change. Because we were so divided into the jocks, the nerds, freaks. And in the chaos, all those walls broke down, and I made new friends. I made friends who were never even supposed to be my friends. And this wasn't just me; I saw this happen with so many others. When you get to know people who are different from you, you begin to learn more about yourself. You change. You grow. I'm a better person now. I'm a better person because of them. Because of my friends. So, I'm not pissed off anymore. But I am worried. Worried, because now that the chaos is over, Principal Higgins and every square like him is gonna do their damnedest to put everything back in order, and I don't want order. Which is why it's hypocritical that I'm wearing this thing. I mean, we look ridiculous. What is this? We look like Roman senators. I mean, it's not who I am. I don't think it's who any of us are. So, honestly, just screw it.
- Higgins: Henderson!
- Dustin: Screw the school. Screw the system. Screw conformity.
- Claudia Henderson: Yes!
- Dustin: Screw everyone and everything trying to hold you back and tear us apart, because this -- this is our year!
- Max: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Hold on, hold on. That's it? "Comfort and happiness"? Could you be more trite? I thought you were some kind of master storyteller or something.
- Lucas: Oh--
- [Will, Lucas and Dustin laugh.]
- Mike: Well, it is true, the comfort and happiness part. But happiness can be found in many places. The knight and the zoomer, they retire from battle, and they settle down in a small village.
- [In a flashforward, Max and Lucas kiss on their movie date.]
- Mike: With each passing day, their love grows stronger. The bard, craving knowledge, makes his way to the Mage's Guild of Enclave, where he spends his days in their vast library. Though deeply devoted to his studies... he still makes time for the occasional adventure.
- [In a flashforward, Dustin runs out of his college and meets up with Steve, hugging him.]
- Steve: Hey, buddy!
- Mike: As for Will the Wise, he travels far and long to the bustling city of Vallaki. It's overwhelming at first. So very different from the village where he spent his youth.
- [In a flashforward, Will sits alone at a bar. A young man sits down next to him and they get to chatting.]
- Mike: But it isn't long before he finds his place there. And with that, deep happiness and acceptance.
- Will: And the storyteller. What about him?
- Mike: The storyteller keeps telling stories, stories inspired by his friends.
- [Flashforward: Mike at a typewriter, bespectacled and writing intently.]
- Mike: One day, he hopes their tales of grand adventure will spread far and wide across the land so all can know of their great bravery. But there is a story that he can never tell. The story of the mage. Or at least not the real story.
- Max: The real story?
- Mike: When she cast Sunbeam...
- [Flashback: El sacrificing herself.]
- Eleven: Goodbye, Mike.
- Mike: ...she expended the last of her energy, and she vanished.
- Mike (Past): EL!
- Mike: But has anyone asked themselves how she cast that spell?
- Dustin: The suppression stone...
- Will: She couldn't have used her magic.
- Mike: In the excitement, no one even noticed. But you see, the mage is very clever. A cleverness only matched by her sister, who, upon hearing the pleads of the paladin, had a change of heart.
- [Flashback of Kali bleeding out.]
- Kali: Don't cry, Jane. My story... was always going to end here. But yours doesn't have to.
- Mike: Together, the sisters devised a plan, a plan to protect the mage from the Order of the Black Hand, who remained hell-bent on stealing her powers. So in order to trick them, she had to make everyone, including her friends, believe that she was dead. And so the sister cast a spell from far away. Safe from the power of the suppression stone. A spell of invisibility.
- Mike (Past): El. Do you see El?
- [Unseen by any of the Party or the soldiers, a door opens on its own. Eleven stumbles into the shed that they used to sneak into the base and crawls into the tunnels beneath Hawkins.]
- Mike: Once the mage escaped, the sister cast one final spell.
- [Back to Kali, again casting. Eleven standing still, ready to die. Zoom in on her hand, flickering like a CRT.]
- Mike: The mage you saw die was not real. She was an illusion.
- Max: Where did she go?
- Mike: No one knows. No one will ever know. But I'd-- I'd like to imagine that she's... in a beautiful land, somewhere far away.
- [Cut to: Eleven, walking through the mountains. She comes upon a cliff, seeing a town in the distance. She smiles.]
- Mike: She finds a small town to call home. Safe from the danger of the Black Hand. And it is here, at last, that she finds peace. That she finally finds happiness.
- Max: And this is just a theory, right?
- Will: How do we know it's true?
- Mike: We don't. Not for sure. But I choose to believe that it is. I believe.
- Dustin: I believe.
- Lucas: I believe.
- Max: I believe.
- Will: I believe.
