The Khakas are a Turkic speaking people living in the Republic of Khakassia in southern Siberia in Russia.

The vernacular term for the proverb is сöспек (söspek).


Ат кістезіп танысча, кізі чоохтазып.

  • Transliteration: At kĭstezĭp tanïsča, kĭzĭ čooxtazïp.
  • English translation: Horses become acquainted by neighing, people by talking.


Кӱскӱ кӱн хыс тооза азырапча.

  • Transliteration: Küskü kün xïs tooza azïrapča.
  • English translation: An autumn day feeds a whole winter.


Полған на тӱлгӱ хузуриин махтапча.

  • Transliteration: Polğan na tülgü xuzuriin maxtapča.
  • English translation: Every fox praises its [own] tail.
  • Meaning: Every cook praises his own broth.


Ӱгренгені пайаанынаң артых.

  • Transliteration: Ügrengenĭ payaanïnaŋ artïx.
  • English translation: Learning is better than becoming rich.


Хортых кізі хозаннаң даа хорыхчаң.

  • Transliteration: Xortïx kĭzĭ xozannaŋ daa xorïxčaŋ
  • English translation: A fearful person even fears the hare.


Читі кізі пір кізіні сағыбаҷаң.

  • Transliteration: Čitĭ kĭzĭ pĭr kĭzĭnĭ sağïbaĵaŋ.
  • English translation: Seven people do not wait for one person.

Чатчатхан тасха торбас öс-парча.

    • Transliteration: Čatčatxan tasxa torbas ös-parča.
    • English translation: Moss grows on a lying stone.
    • Meaning: A rolling stone gathers no moss

Маңзыраан сеек сӱтке тӱсчең.

    • Transliteration: Maŋzïraan seek sütke tüsčeŋ.
    • English translation: The hurrying fly falls into the milk.
    • Meaning: Haste makes waste.
