- Carrie Watts: In your room.
- Jessie Mae: In my room?
- Carrie Watts: Yes, ma'am.

- Carrie Watts: In your dresser drawer. Right-hand side.
- Jessie Mae: In my dresser drawer?
- Carrie Watts: Yes, ma'am. I looked on the top of your dresser, wasn't there, something told me...
- Jessie Mae: Mother Watts! Ludie, how many times have I asked her never to look into my dresser drawers?
- Carrie Watts: You wanted me to find the recipe.
- Jessie Mae: I don't want you to go into my dresser drawers. I'd like a little privacy, if you don't mind.
- Carrie Watts: Yes, ma'am.
- Jessie Mae: And don't you ever let me catch you looking in them again for anything. I can't stand people snooping in my dresser drawers.
- Carrie Watts: All right. Next time you just find it yourself! [angrily tosses the recipe to the floor]
- Jessie Mae: You pick that recipe up, if you please?
- Carrie Watts: Pick it up yourself. I have no intention of picking that up! [sits on the couch]
- Jessie Mae: You pick that up!
- Carrie Watts: I won't!
- Ludie: [seriously] Mama.
- Jessie Mae: You will!
- Ludie: Jessie Mae, for God's sake, you're both acting like children. It's 1:30 in the morning.
- Jessie Mae: You make her pick that up.
- Carrie Watts: I won't!
- Jessie Mae: You will! This is my house and you'll do exactly as you're told!
- [Carrie is on a bus conversing with Thelma]
- Carrie Watts: Excuse me for getting personal, but what is a pretty girl like you doing traveling alone?
- Thelma: My husband's just been sent overseas. I'm going to stay with my family.
- Carrie Watts: Oh, I'm sorry to hear. Will you just say the 91st Psalm over and over to yourself? It will be a bower of strength and protection to him. "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of my Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress." [Thelma breaks down crying] Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, honey.
- Thelma: That's all right. I'm just lonesome for him, is all.
- Carrie Watts: You keep him under the Lord's wing and he'll be safe.
- Thelma: Yes, ma'am. I'm sorry. I don't know what gets into me.
- Carrie Watts: Nobody needs to be ashamed of crying 'cause we've all dampened a pillow sometime or other. I know I have.
