How do you keep a secret this big?

Angus MacMorrow

[edit]
  • [looking for Crusoe] Where are you? Where have you gone? Crusoe, where the devil are you?
  • I wish I could swim like you. I wish I wasn't so afraid.
  • That's a good boy. I'm sorry for grabbing.
  • Jings, Crusoe. You're as big as a prize pig. How did you grow so fast?
  • Faster, Crusoe! We have to get to the net!
  • [feeding Crusoe a can of sardines] Here you are. Look what I've got. Don't be greedy now.

Anne MacMorrow

[edit]
  • [after a botched demonstration] Angus, this is not the place for us. Can someone drive us home, please?
  • Kirstie, Angus, run along. We don't want to distract our guests from their duties.
  • A sea monster? Are you telling me this has all been about a sea monster?! What is going on here?! Has anyone gone mad?! A sea monster?! There is no monster. [turns to Captain Hamilton] There's just you with your bloody gun! [turns to Lewis] And you, filling his head with tales of sea creatures and magic? There's no monster, and there's no magic.

Captain Thomas Hamilton

[edit]
  • The submarine net will be down to permit passage by routine marine traffic and to let their subs in. And then we will raise the net... and we will destroy them.
  • The boy needs discipline, Anne.
  • DID I OR DID I NOT TELL YOU TO WAIT OVER THERE?!?!
  • Do you know why I take two pairs of trousers onto the golf course, Mrs. MacMorrow? In case I get a hole in one.
  • All the radios are down! We have to get to the net!

Lewis Mowbray

[edit]
  • Mrs. MacMorrow hired me to help her in the lodge. So this will be my workshop now. And I don't want you coming in and out of it, you understand?
  • Well, it looks like a... Like a bloody water horse.
  • [telling Angus a tale about the water horse] Aye, it was my Uncle Lachlan who first told me about them. Many years ago, there was a lost traveler, and he's weeping bitter tears, because he cannot find his way home. H-He'd given up hope. Then suddenly, who should appear at the bank of the loch to this traveler but a sea spirit. A water horse. Now, the traveler, no fool is he, knows that the water horse is a creature of magic, one that could grow 10 feet tall overnight. So the traveler, he feeds the water horse, strokes it, flatters it with compliments, and finally, the traveler says: "Incidentally, water horse, my dear friend, I'm wondering, if you've no other pressing engagements, could I trouble you to carry me across the loch on your back? Show me the way home?"

Kirstie MacMorrow

[edit]
  • Angus, come quickly. I've something funny to show you.
  • It was getting too loud. Somebody would've heard.
  • I never swear, Angus MacMorrow. I'll never speak a word.

Older Angus MacMorrow

[edit]
  • Wait now, son. There's more to that photo than meets the eye.
  • We're a tiny village in the wilds of Scotland, but 20 men we lost.
  • Angus was just like every other wee boy. He wanted his daddy home again, but he also had another problem.
  • [revealing himself to the tourists] Angus MacMorrow is the name.

Others

[edit]
  • Jimmy McGarry: No, it's a monster. A creature with horns, a devil!
  • Sgt. Wallace Strunk: [dancing with Gracie to jazz music in the kitchen] You're a fine woman, Gracie.
  • Gracie: Hush your wheesht, you daft dog!

Dialogue

[edit]
[the movie begins with two American tourists entering the Bonnie Piper pub]
Female Tourist: What is that?
Male Tourist: It's the famous picture of the monster. But it's fake.
Female Tourist: How do you know it's fake? It looks real.
Older Angus MacMorrow: Oh, it's fake, all right.
Male Tourist: Of course it's fake, everyone knows that.
Older Angus MacMorrow: Wait, now, son. There's more to that photo than meets the eye.
Male Tourist: Oh, really?
Older Angus MacMorrow: Well, if you'd like to know the real truth...
Female Tourist: Yeah. I wanna know. Come on, it'll be fun. Come on.
Older Angus MacMorrow: Well, you have to go back to World War II. The Germans have captured the rest of Europe and were only 100 miles or so from these shores.

Kirstie MacMorrow: [arrives on a bicycle] Mummy! Look what I've got. [hands Anne an orange]
Anne MacMorrow: Where did you get that?
Kirstie MacMorrow: Every volunteer got four oranges today.
Anne MacMorrow: I haven't had an orange in Lord knows how long.
Kirstie MacMorrow: How was the shore? Did Angus have fun?
Anne MacMorrow: Angus, fun?

[Angus unexpectedly encounters an English bulldog, Churchill, in the kitchen pantry]
Sgt. Wallace Strunk: What's that? Churchill. [backs Churchill up] That's enough, Churchill.
Angus MacMorrow: Who are you?
Sgt. Wallace Strunk: Sergeant Wallace Strunk, 12th Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery, first battery cook. Churchill, Regiment mascot. Unauthorized personnel.
Angus MacMorrow: I just wanted a wee snack.
Sgt. Wallace Strunk: Provisions dispensed only by written orders in triplicate. Do you have the paperwork? [Angus shakes his head] Then, off you go. [turns to Churchill] Who's Daddy's boy, then, eh? Good boy, good Churchill. [turns to Angus] You're still here?
Angus MacMorrow: I take out the rubbish.
Sgt. Wallace Strunk: On the double, then.

Captain Thomas Hamilton: Perfect.
Wormsley: Oh, it's an amazing view, sir.
Captain Thomas Hamilton: HMS Royal Oak was lost to a German U-boat in Scapa Flow, not a hundred miles from this spot, 833 sailors lost. We're not here for the scenery, Wormsley.
Wormsley: Yes, sir.
Captain Thomas Hamilton: Now, make no mistake, we are on the front line here. Now, I have studied the German advance. If they invade, they will come right through here. This is the deepest loch in Scotland. It's perfect for their troopships. But they will send submarines first for reconnaissance.
Wormsley: Won't the steel net stop them, sir?
Captain Thomas Hamilton: The submarine net will be down to permit passage by routine marine traffic and to let their subs in. And then we will raise the net... and we will destroy them.

Jock McGowan: What are they doing up on that hill?
Jimmy McGarry: It's a secret mission. They're after submarines.
Jock McGowan: Well, if it's secret, how do you know about it?
Jimmy McGarry: I have my ways, my contacts.
Jock McGowan: Aye. We'll make contact with them oars, pull us over some more fish.

Jimmy's Mate 1: Hey, did you see all those jeeps and lorries going up and down that hill?
Jimmy's Mate 2: You're late, and that is very hush-hush.
Jimmy McGarry: Aye. It's a secret mission, that's what I hear. Top-secret.
Bartender: Oh, I'll say one thing, Jimmy. If it's a secret, you'd be the last person to tell about it.
Jimmy's Mate 1: That's cruel. That's very cruel.
Jimmy's Mate 2: Aye.
Lewis Mowbray: Evening.
Bartender: All right. What do you like?
Lewis Mowbray: Pint of McEwan's.
Jimmy McGarry: Looks like rain.
Lewis Mowbray: Yeah, it might.
Jimmy McGarry: You're not from the village. Would you be with the artillery?
Sgt. Wallace Strunk: [enters the pub with the men] Here we are, lads. Our home away from home. Did you hear the captain today? "We're on the front lines." Front line, my aunt. We're here 'cause his daddy got him put away from danger as the War Office could find.
Jimmy McGarry: You're the boys with the big gun up the loch.
Sgt. Wallace Strunk: Indeed, we are.
Jimmy McGarry: Would that thing sink a submarine?
Sgt. Wallace Strunk: With one shell. What are you having, lads?
Soldier: A pint of heavy.
Sgt. William Strunk: Yeah, I'll have a whiskey. What have you got there?

Angus MacMorrow: [discovers Lewis dumping the water from the barrel] No! No, no! No! What are you doing?! Why did you empty the barrel? Did you see anything fall out of it?
Lewis Mowbray: Only water. What are you looking at?
Angus MacMorrow: Uh... Nothing. You'd remember if you'd seen it.
Lewis Mowbray: Well, I didn't see anything. [heads inside the workshop]
Angus MacMorrow: Who are you?
Lewis Mowbray: Mrs. MacMorrow hired me to help her in the lodge, so this will be my workshop now. And I don't want you coming in and out of it, you understand?
Angus MacMorrow: This is my father's workshop! He's off fighting in the war! You can't just come in here and...
Lewis Mowbray: Lad! Lad, when your father returns, he can do with it what he wants. But for now, this shop is mine! And I want to be left alone. Am I clear? Have I made myself clear?!

[Crusoe has unexpectedly wandered into a bathtub, where he startles Kirstie who runs out of the bathroom screaming down the hall]
Angus MacMorrow: [runs upstairs] CRUSOE, NO!! [rushes to find Kirstie] Stop! Get back in there!
Kirstie MacMorrow: No! No, it's horrible!
Angus MacMorrow: He won't hurt you! You have to believe me! He won't hurt you!
Kirstie MacMorrow: [shrieks] What is it?!
Angus MacMorrow: I don't know, but it came from an egg. I tried to tell you. [sees Crusoe grown up] Jings, Crusoe! You're as big as a prize pig. How did you grow so fast? I thought I'd lost you. He's very friendly, aren't you, boy?
Kirstie MacMorrow: Angus, Mummy will have a fit.
Angus MacMorrow: Don't you dare tell her. Kirstie, please, he needs me. I'm his only friend. I saved his life.
Kirstie MacMorrow: [gives in and walks towards Crusoe] The poor, wee thing.
Angus MacMorrow: You won't tell? [Kirstie shakes her head] Swear?
Kirstie MacMorrow: I don't swear, Angus MacMorrow. I'll never speak a word.
Angus MacMorrow: You're a good sister after all.

Angus MacMorrow: Did you have to turn him into a mummy?
Kirstie MacMorrow: It was getting too loud. Somebody would have heard.
Angus MacMorrow: [takes the band off Crusoe] Quiet, Crusoe! [he and Kirstie hear a knock at the door]
Kirstie MacMorrow: Who's there?
Lewis Mowbray: I'm here to fix the bathroom.
Angus MacMorrow: We're using it!
Lewis Mowbray: What, both of you? But I thought it was out of order. [Crusoe jumps in the water repeatedly] What's that noise?
Angus MacMorrow: I have a cough! [coughs]
Lewis Mowbray: You got an animal in there? Look, you... You better let me in, or your mother will hear about this.
Angus MacMorrow: No.
Lewis Mowbray: Let me in. [Kirstie opens the door and Lewis enters the bathroom] Listen, you two, all right? I have to do my job. Your mother told me this bathroom has been out of order for three days... [discovers Crusoe in the tub and jumps back in shock] Now, what... What is that?!

Captain Thomas Hamilton: [taps the glass with a knife] Gentlemen, [clears throat] the king, the regiment, and the lady of the house.
Men: The king, the regiments and the lady of the house.
Emily MacMorrow: Well, gentlemen, technically speaking, I'm not actually the lady of the house, but, um, I suppose for tonight, I'm happy enough to serve that role. [the men chuckle] Thank you.

Emily MacMorrow: Mr. Lewis, what in goodness sake?
Lewis Mowbray: Uh, sorry, uh, the name's Mowbray, ma'am.
Emily MacMorrow: What?
Lewis Mowbray: Uh, sorry, ma'am. The dog got loose, and I was trying to catch him.
Emily MacMorrow: Oh, I should say you failed at that.
Lewis Mowbray: Yes, ma'am.
Captain Thomas Hamilton: Did you think it's funny, Mowbray?!
Lewis Mowbray: No, no. It's a very serious matter.
Captain Thomas Hamilton: You hold your tongue, man.
Lewis Mowbray: You're not in your stately home now, Hamilton. I'll not be taking orders from you.
Emily MacMorrow: That is quite enough. Go and collect Angus, and take him to his room immediately.
Lewis Mowbray: Yes, ma'am.

Angus MacMorrow: Lewis, do you know anything more about water horses?
Lewis Mowbray; Well, I think it was... Aye, it was my Uncle Lachlan who first told me about them.
Angus MacMorrow: Well, what happens? Does the water horse help him?
Lewis Mowbray: Um, I don't remember.
Angus MacMorrow: What? Does the water horse help him or doesn't he?
Lewis Mowbray: Well, it was so long ago that I heard it. It... It either carries him across the loch, or it drags him down to the bottom to his watery death. I'm not sure which.

Captain Thomas Hamilton: Mowbray, you're all wet, man. You been fishing?
Lewis Mowbray: No. I went diving, to see all those submarines you're going to sink.
Captain Thomas Hamilton: Oh, you like to mock the war effort, do you?
Lewis Mowbray: No. No, I don't. Our forces over there in Europe on the front lines, they're doing a great job.
Captain Thomas Hamilton: I want you to stay away from young Angus. Do you understand? I consider you a bad influence.
Lewis Mowbray: Is that so?
Captain Thomas Hamilton: I don't know if you're a spy, or a deserter, or just simply a coward, Mowbray. But I'm gonna find out.
Lewis Mowbray: Oh, I see. They took you away from the battlefront... to hunt for deserters and cowards. Well, I'm neither. So you can take that Sassenach attitude of yours back to where you came from.
Captain Thomas Hamilton: You stay away from the boy. Do you understand?

[Older Angus MacMorrow is concluding his story to the tourists]
Older Angus MacMorrow: Some say the creature comes back from time to time, looking for his friend. Some claim to have seen it over the years. But the boy never saw it again.
Female Tourist: That was a wonderful story.
Older Angus MacMorrow: Aye. And all true, every word of it.
Male Tourist: Thank you, uh...
Older Angus MacMorrow: Angus. Angus MacMorrow is the name.
