Tu Youyou

Tu Youyou (屠呦呦 Tú Yōuyōu; born 30 December 1930) is a Chinese malariologist and pharmaceutical chemist. She discovered artemisinin (qīnghāosù, 青蒿素) and dihydroartemisinin, highly effective inhibitors of the Plasmodium parasites that cause malaria. (In traditional Chinese medicine, the dried above-ground part of the plant Artemisia annua is called “qīnghāo".) For her research, Tu received the 2011 Lasker–DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award and the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (shared with William C. Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura).
