There is no evidance that Ben Franklin ever uttered the aforementioned quote. In fact he rather loathed beer and beer drinkers. He did however enjoy the fruit of the vine. In a letter penned by him in 1779 to a french economist, André Morellet, he did write the following. "Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards; there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy." It is very easy to see that beer drinkers could have changed it just enough to suit them.
