Welcome[edit]

Hi Afkafka~enwikiquote. Welcome to English Wikiquote.

Enjoy! ~ Jeff Q (talk) 04:59, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for the welcome Jeff Q :-) wikiquote's become something of my gripping hand and yet it's missing so much that I need to be grokking ;-) I'm also going to give in to my compulsion to kill-spree typos, it's finally got to me... heh. Looking forward to contributing once I get my head around article creation. I've been wanting to put together a personal collection of excerpts/quotes from the books I've read and own, for a very long time... makes sense to do it here :-)

If Wikiquote is your "gripping hand", what are your other two hands? ~ Jeff Q (talk) 03:58, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

well... on the one hand, I need one to hold my notebook still, on the other hand, I generally require a second to write on it, and on the gripping hand, a convenient third limb would be able to grab and hold a reference work without interrupting the handwriting... touchtyping has a similar problem. a reference to The Mote In God's Eye by Larry Niven Afkafka 04:09, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I got the Mote reference; that's how I knew to ask about your other two hands instead of one. I loved Niven's inventive way of creating an entire novel out of the old whimsical phrase "on the third hand…". I also got the Stranger in a Strange Land reference. These are what's so cool about working on Wikiquote — we get to record all these neat ideas for others to run across and become curious about their origins.
Since you're just getting going here, and have lots of books at hand, allow me to encourage you to provide specific citations for the quotes you add, like I've done for Heinlein's The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress and am working on for others. (Note that page numbers only work when you cite the specific edition, preferably with ISBN.) Sources and verifiability are a major differentiating factor between Wikiquote and other quote websites. Any help you can give, at your own convenience, is greatly appreciated. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 07:57, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hehe, I did realise later that your question made my answer somewhat obselete. I do intend to be specific, y' need have nae doot o' that... but I am sadly only as yet an egg, so the reminder and the tip is well appreciated. I find it a little irritating to find lists composed mainly of 'attributed' - too many pages I like to refer to either don't quote the work I wanted at all, or make me search for it. I signed up to wikipedia as well, mostly just for typo correction, because as good a reference as it is, I am not much of an encyclopaedist... wikiquote is going to be my focus, because I'm addicted to aphorisms.
