[edit]Welcome to Wikiquote! I hope you will find this site useful, and look forward to seeing your future contributions.
I am somewhat concerned, however, about your article on Eric Fulton. Wikiquote is a collection of quotes from notable people and creative works, but I could find no evidence of his notability. Could you describe who this person is, so we may judge whether his quotes are reasonable content for Wikiquote? I have nominated the article for deletion, which is our primary mechanism for reviewing controversial articles. If you can provide solid data on this person's notability, it will encourage people to support the article's preservation. If you have any questions or concerns about this, feel free to post a note to me on my Talk page. Thank you for your assistance. — Jeff Q (talk) 03:53, 22 May 2005 (UTC)
- Hi Jeffq,
- I'm quite new to the Wikiquote/Wiki idea, and so I guess I may have been a little misguided in my post, for I am Eric Fulton. After reading the rules (I admit, silly to read the rules after I post) it would lead some to think it was a "Vanity" page. Well, the reason that I posted my quotes (yes, they are mine) is because my friends said that I should. I am in Varsity Legislative Debate at my school (as you probably found if you googled my name) and a bit of a philosopher. I constantly come up with good quotes (I think:D) and think they would be useful and/or fun to read to people who come across wikiquote. If I am out of line posting new ones as they arise, or even quotes that I have come up with in the first place, then feel free to delete them, and I am sorry.
- Sincerely,
- Eric Fulton
In the MediaWiki world, a vanity page is generally defined as an article about oneself that doesn't fit the needs of the wiki project. It's considered bad form to create your article (outside of user pages), even if you are a famous person. The goal of most MediaWiki projects is unbiased accuracy, and self-editing can't help but appear to be biased.
The Wikiquote project uses articles for quotes from notable people and creative works. Although you may be well-known in your school and have many profound and amusing things to say, we're looking for quotes from famous folks, written works read widely throughout the English-speaking world, movies and TV shows that have some notability, and other such sources. As someone who has been listed in many school and professional directories for my accomplishments, is well known in my field of work, and has 100+ relevant Google hits himself, I can assure you that I'm far from notable enough to have my own article. It's nothing personal. ☺
If you wish to record your own quotes for posterity and public access, you are welcome to do so in your own user page (User:Citrate in your case). Users may post what they wish (with some limits and subject to community approval, which is mostly laissez-faire) on their user pages. You might take a look at some of the links in other users' signatures in their talk page postings, which go to the appropriate user pages, to see a variety of ideas for these pages. On mine, you'll find a personal quote section which may suit your own (and your friends') desires.
By the way, when you post information to talk pages (like this), please sign your posting by adding four tildes (~~~~) to the end of the posting. This will cause the wiki system to add your user name (with a link to your user page) and a date/timestamp. But don't do this for contributions to regular articles. In those, the page history records each user's contributions. Thank you for your cooperation. I hope you will look past this initial faux pas and feel free to use and contribute to our quotation compendium! — Jeff Q (talk) 01:43, 24 May 2005 (UTC)
