Welcome back, DW. I noticed your recent contribution of over 70 edits to a large number of themes, including several dozen new ones, after an absence from Wikiquote of more than 2 years. Much has changed at Wikiquote since then. One significant change relevant to your contributions is that we are trying to avoid just copying quote material from other quote websites and works, for three basic reasons:

  1. Most importantly, this kind of activity got French Wikiquote shut down for copyright infringement. (It was only recently restarted, and is having to rebuild from scratch.) Although a quote site cannot copyright its individual quotes as taken from other works, it can copyright its editorial selection and presentation, and simply pasting such a selection into another website can be considered a copyright violation.
  2. We are pushing the Wikimedia philosophy of citing reliable sources in lieu of an editorial board to ensure accuracy. Not only does this set us apart from all other quote websites, but it also helps us avoid (1) by demonstrating that we aren't just copying the material. In fact, there is a growing practice of simply removing new quotes that have no sources, especially in poorly-sourced articles, as themes often are.
  3. Having grown from a few hundred to nearly 10,000 articles, Wikiquote has adopted some formatting guidelines to improve the overall appearance of the project. Wikiquote:Templates shows an overview of those guidelines, and Wikiquote:Templates/Themes provides a boilerplate for theme articles that we ask editors to follow when creating a new article.

I would really appreciate it if you could go back over your edits and bring them up to current standards. We still have few editors to clean up existing articles, and it will otherwise take substantial time for them to fix all this new material.

You might also want to take a look at our current help pages listed in our welcome message, which we try to post to all new editors. Many of them have been substantially updated in the time you've been away.

Hi DW~enwikiquote. Welcome to English Wikiquote. Enjoy!

If you have questions about any of this, I'd be happy to answer them. Thank you for your consideration. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 16:21, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you have taken my advice and are adding some structure and sources to the articles. Thank you very much for doing this so quickly! By your more recent additions, I deduce that you are basically copying the entire contents of Louis Klopsch's Many Thoughts of Many Minds: A Treasury of Quotations from the Literature of Every Land and Every Land (1896), as digitized into PDF format by Google Book Search. Although one can infer from "About Google Book Search" that this book is in the public domain (especially given its age), I have not yet found any clear statement from Google whether it allows this republishing in a new form to be copied freely. Without a clear license statement from Google, this use of this work, even though the original may be public domain, could actually be a copyright infringement against Google.
Much as the community would benefit from your massive contributions to our theme pages, I must ask you to stop, at least temporarily, this wholesale copying effort, until we can determine Google's licensing for its copies of public-domain works. Thank you for your cooperation. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 23:30, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Counsel[edit]

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Counsel, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but it may not satisfy Wikiquote's criteria for inclusion, for the reasons given in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikiquote is not" and Wikiquote's deletion policy).

You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Votes for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.
