- Wishing to avoid shedding the blood of the people whom I love, of the army for which I have sacrificed everything, and of the Arab nation which I have sought to serve in sincere devotion, I submit my resignation from the presidency to the beloved Syrian people who elected me and gave me their confidence, in the hope that my gesture will serve the cause of the country. I pray God to preserve them from all ill, to make them united and invincible and to lead them to the heights of glory.[1]
