Copying from other sites[edit]

Please stop copying pages from texts.00.gs. It is a violation of copyright. Wikiquote is not a web host for mirroring other sites. Thank you. ~ Ningauble 18:46, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In "UserTalk:0XQ", you wrote : "Please stop copying pages from texts.00.gs. It is a violation of copyright. Wikiquote is not a web host for mirroring other sites."
But since I am the owner of http://texts.00.gs, this would not be copyright violation.0XQ (talk) 19:06, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(1) Please discuss Wikiquote at Wikiquote. (2) Please read the "If you hold the copyright..." section of the notice on the copied articles. (3) Be that as it may, Wikiquote is not a web host for mirroring other sites. ~ Ningauble (talk) 19:49, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

N.B. More than one editor of Wikipedia has written to me that I ought to place (upload) onto the appropriate Wikipedia-associated area (which would be Wikiquote) the texts to which I was linking my articles written in Wikipedia. It was explained to me that crosslinking within Wikipedia would then be possible, so that the information could then be wholly contained within the Wikipedia areas, without having to be dependent on external links. Thus, in uploading to Wikiquote I have been merely following what has been explained to me as standard Wikipedia policy, and in which I was merely following invitations to do so from Wikipedia editors. Now, I did write to one Wikipedia editor that I might meet up with some contrary editor (who would oppose my compliance with this policy) if I were to do so, and now that predicted situation may possibly have occurred.0XQ 00:58, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In order to protect copyright, we cannot assume User:0XQ is the owner of texts.00.gs. Anyone in the world could create an anonymous account here and make that claim. In order to release the contents of that site under the GFDL:
... either display a notice to this effect at the site of original publication or send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en at wikimedia dot org or a postal letter to the Wikimedia Foundation. These messages must explicitly permit use under the GFDL.
However, as discussed below and at Wikiquote:Votes for deletion, copies of entire pages or substantial excerpts from http://texts.00.gs may not be appropriate contributions to Wikiquote. ~ Ningauble 19:07, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I now have done both ("display a notice to this effect at the site" and "send an e-mail from an address associated .. to permissions-en at wikimedia dot org").0XQ 00:15, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see the notice at http://texts.00.gs/ and have remarked on it at Wikiquote:Votes for deletion/Shamanism#Related discussion under "There are no copyright violations". ~ Ningauble 16:14, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you.0XQ 20:30, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Shamanism[edit]

An article that you have been involved in editing, Shamanism, has been listed for deletion. All contributions are appreciated, but it may not satisfy Wikiquote's criteria for inclusion, for the reasons given in the nomination for deletion (see also what Wikiquote is and is not). If you are interested in the discussion, please participate by adding your comments at Wikiquote:Votes for deletion/Shamanism. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Thank you. Note: This also applies to each of the subpages referenced on this main page. ~ UDScott 01:15, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry if you may have gotten the wrong impression about "standard Wikipedia policy" from some Wikipedia editors. While they are affiliated, Wikiquote and Wikipedia are separate projects, and more than one Wikipedia editor is unfamiliar with Wikiquote policies and guidelines.
I can see that substantial research has gone into creating texts.00.gs, and if I understand your intent (correct me if I am wrong) you want to include that information in Wikipedia by reference. Please realize that Wikiquote is not an appendix to Wikipedia for extended bibliographic reference materials or for documenting details that do not fit an encyclopedic summary style. Wikiquote is a compendium of "quotable" quotes, along the lines of what may be found in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations and similar works.
An article with quotable quotes about shamanism would be very welcome at Wikiquote. If your research has turned up some quotes that are particularly witty, pithy, wise, eloquent, or poignant, and are famous or are from notable or influential people, then please consider submitting them in a format appropriate to Wikiquote. (See Wikiquote:Templates#Formatting guidelines, particularly Templates/Themes and Templates/People.)
This may not suit your original purpose, but it could still be a good thing. Regards. ~ Ningauble 19:11, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The following is copied from User talk:Ningauble in order to keep the conversation together:
I appreciate your comments on my "user page" for Wikiquote. Now, if this sort of material (which I included in "Shamanism") is not appropriate for Wikiquote, then perhaps it may be more appropriate for Wikibooks (or else possibly for Wikipedia itself). I have not as yet tried submitting it directly to either, as (in "usertalk" of articles written by me in Wikipedia) I received some chiding already from editors (of Wikipedia) for including even a very few direct quotations from books (they tell me to paraphrase rather than to quote); so I naturally thought that (by its title) Wikiquote would be the appropriate place to upload articles consisting almost entirely of quotations.0XQ 23:04, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your frustration, but please recognize that these projects are dedicated to specific purposes. They are not merely host sites for publishing anything that interests you in whatever format you like. You are welcome to contribute toward those purposes, but should review their policies and guidelines, and examine a sample of recognized good articles to understand what those purposes are and to learn about their standards for acceptable contributions.
I notice that you have posted three additional pages without any regard for Wikiquote's formatting guidelines whatsoever, and including material that is evidently not quotable or notable. I am adding these to the list of similar pages nominated at Wikiquote:Votes for deletion. ~ Ningauble 17:23, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
