WQ:MOS changes[edit]

Please do not make substantive changes to Wikiquote:Manual of style without discussing them first on its talk page. In the specific situation of punctuation and quotation marks, Wikiquote follows Wikipedia's long-held practice of using British "logical" punctuation style, in which quotation marks are placed strictly around quoted material. This is part of a hard-won compromise that also mandates American-style quotation marks ("double" for ordinary quotes, with 'single' quotes for nested quoting) rather than British 'single' quotes. Since Wikimedia is a global, not an exclusively American, production, this compromise reinforces the spririt of cooperation even as it provides two practical effects: American quote marks for more flexibility and less interference with searches, and British punctuation placement that avoids the erroneous implication of punctuation not in the original text but placed merely for the sake of formalism. As a publisher in its own right, Wikimedia has established this as a house style, just like the American references you mentioned (which contradict each other on many other topics) as well as the British ones you didn't (which are also mutually inconsistent in many ways). (And don't get me started on Canadian, Australian, and Indian style guides! ) Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 04:10, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
