Bree Newsome, Jennicet Gutierrez, Marilyn Zuniga. Women warriors. On July 4th, 2015 Bree Newsome scaled the flagpole on the South Carolina State House grounds and removed the racist symbol of slavery, the Confederate Flag. With the assistance of Black and white comrades, Newsome carried out an act of heroic defiance that resonated to all of us in struggle. Bree Newsome and James Tyson, who assisted her from the ground, were subsequently arrested. Newsome is facing at least three years in jail, if convicted. Activists are demanding that ALL charges be dropped against her. |
