' Text Appearing After Image: 1. Alexandria. Arrival. The perfectly flat N.E. coast of Egypt, and even Alexandriaitself, are not visible to the steamboat passenger until very shortly be-fore the vessel enters the harbour. We first observe the lighthouse ris-ing conspicuously above the flat and colourless line of the coast, andthen a row of windmills, light-coloured buildings, and the smoke of thesteamboats in the harbour. On a hill to the left rises the chateau of theKhedive at Ramleh (p. 222), and on the coast, to the right, at the be-ginning of the entrance to the harbour, we perceive the so-called Babel-Arab (Beduin Gate), the extremity of a line of fortifications extendingbetween the sea and Lake Mareotis (p. 223).
