Summary

Description
English: Hunting Amazons mosaic The English notice speaks of “Hunted Amazons” but I have learned to ignore translation errors, it's the Amazons that are on the hunt. The depicted Amazons have been hunting lions, leopard and wolf. Two of them in the foreground (Melanippe and Penthesileia) are on horseback, in the back Hippolyte and Thermodosa hunt on foot. To the left of Penthesileia we see a wounded leopard and a dog, to the left of Thermodosa an ostrich and dog fight. In the middle a wounded lion with blood streaming. In a large border Eros’ hunting scenes are depicted among acanthus leaves, at the corner woman masks symbolize abundance. The mosaic decorated the main room of a villa and dates from 5-6th century AD.
