Description This is an image of Plate 1 from the 1647 Dutch book Ongeluckige voyagie, van't schip Batavia ("Unlucky voyage of the ship Batavia"). In the original work this plate followed Page 2.

Source Scanned from a facsimile of the original book, published in The Voyage of the Batavia (Australian Maritime Series Number Two), Hordern House, 1994.
Author The overall work is generally attributed either to Francisco Pelsaert or Jan Jansz, but authorship of the plates therein is unknown.

The three components of this plate were split up and displayed as separate figures in Willem Siebenhaar's 1897 translation "The Abrolhos Tragedy", published in The Western Mail, Christmas Number, 24 December 1897. They can be seen at Image:The Abrolhos Tragedy (Figure 1).jpg, Image:The Abrolhos Tragedy (Figure 3).jpg and Image:The Abrolhos Tragedy (Figure 4).jpg.
