The Gaza Strip initially emerged as an [[w:Occupation of the Gaza Strip by the United Arab Republic|Egyptian-occupied territory]] after the [[w:1948 Arab–Israeli War|1948 Arab–Israeli War]]. Following the 1967 [[w:Six-Day War|Six-Day War]] the territory came under [[w:Israeli-occupied territories|Israeli military occupation]] until [[w:Israeli disengagement from Gaza|2005]]. In the 1990s, as part of the [[w:Oslo Accords|Oslo Accords]], the administration over most of the area was handed over to the [[w:Palestinian National Authority|Palestinian National Authority]], alongside the existence of [[w:Israeli_settlements|Israeli settlements]] in some areas, which were [[w:Israeli disengagement from Gaza|evacuated in 2005]]. Following [[w:Israeli disengagement from Gaza|Israel's disengagement]], in 2006, Hamas won the [[w:2006 Palestinian legislative election|last-held Palestinian legislative election]] and started administering Gaza; it took full control after [[w:Battle of Gaza (2007)|a brief civil war]] the following year.
