The '''[[w:United Arab Emirates|United Arab Emirates]]''' or the '''UAE''', is a country located in the southeast end of the [[w:Arabian Peninsula|Arabian Peninsula]] on the [[w:Persian Gulf|Persian Gulf]], bordering [[w:Oman|Oman]] to the east and [[Saudi Arabia]] to the south, as well as sharing sea borders with [[w:Qatar|Qatar]] and [[Iran]]. In 2013, the UAE's total population was 9.2 million, of which 1.4 million are [[w:Emirati people|Emirati citizens]] and 7.8 million are [[w:Expatriates in the United Arab Emirates|expatriates]]. The UAE's [[w:Oil reserves in the United Arab Emirates|oil reserves]] are the [[w:List of countries by proven oil reserves|fourth-largest in the world]]. 

Established in December 1971, the country is a federation of seven [[w:emirate|emirate]]s. The constituent emirates are [[w:Abu Dhabi (emirate)|Abu Dhabi]] (which serves as the capital), [[w:Emirate of Ajman|Ajman]], [[w:Dubai|Dubai]], [[w:Fujairah|Fujairah]], [[w:Ras al-Khaimah|Ras al-Khaimah]], [[w:Sharjah (emirate)|Sharjah]], and [[w:Umm al-Quwain|Umm al-Quwain]]. Each emirate is governed by an absolute monarch who jointly form the [[w:Federal Supreme Council|Federal Supreme Council]]. One of the monarchs is selected as the [[w:President of the United Arab Emirates|President of the United Arab Emirates]]. [[Islam]] is the official religion of the UAE, and [[w:Arabic language|Arabic]] is the official language, although English is widely used.
