Out here survival is everything
Captain Richard Phillips
[edit]
- Listen up, we have been boarded by four armed pirates. You know the drill. We stay hidden no matter what. I don't want any hostages. We stay locked down until help arrives. No one comes out until you hear the nonduress password, which is "suppertime." If the pirates find you, remember, you know the ship, they don't. Make them feel like they're in charge, but keep them away from the important things like the generator and the engine controls. Stick together and we'll be alright. Good luck.
- You're not just a fisherman! You're not just a fisherman!
- [to Muse] This is between us! I'm trying to straighten this out! Are you?! This is how you solve your problems?! You said you just wanted money! You said this was just business! Is this business?! Is this how you do business?!
Dialogue
[edit]- UKMTO Officer: Maersk Alabama, you should alert your crew, get your fire hoses ready, and follow lockdown procedures.
- Captain Phillips: Yeah. Is that it?
- UKMTO Officer: I'm relaying your transmission now, but chances are it's just fishermen.

"They're not here to fish."
- Captain Phillips: They're not here to fish.
- [The pirates have successfully boarded the ship and are holding the men at gunpoint]
- Muse: Captain, relax. Nobody get hurts, no Al-Qaeda here. Just business. We want money. When we get paid, everything gonna be okay. The ship, where from?
- Captain Phillips: The ship? Uh...America, it's an American ship.
- [on hearing this the other pirates cheer]
- Najee: Yes! Yes!
- Muse: You, Yankee?
- Captain Phillips: Me?
- Muse: Yeah?
- Captain Phillips: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yankee Irish, yeah.
- Muse: [speaking to the pirates in Somali; subtitled] From now on this one is called Irish, okay?
- [The pirates laugh]
- Muse: Okay, Irish. What items you carry?
- Captain Phillips: What do you mean?
- Muse: TV? Car?
- Captain Phillips: Shipping TV, car? No, no, we just uh...we just got...
- Muse: Dollars?
- Captain Phillips: Uh..we do. Kenny?
- Kenny: Yeah?
- Captain Phillips: Kenny, what do we have in the safe? About what, thirty...thirty thousand dollars in the safe?
- Kenny: Uh...yeah.
- Captain Richard Phillips: You know, I think we have in the safe, we got thirty thousand dollars. It's yours.
- Muse: Thirty thousand dollars? What am I? Do I look like a beggar?
- Muse: Look at me.
- Capt. Phillips: Sure.
- Muse: Look at me.
- Capt. Phillips: Sure.
- Muse: I'm the captain now.
- CASTELLANO [OVER RADIO]: Alabama lifeboat, come in.
- Muse: [Nervously] No military action. No military action. No al Qaeda. We are just fishermen.
- MAN: [IN SOMALI] Calm down, brother. We're here for the captain, not for you.
- They have a spy with them.
- Muse: [IN SOMALI] Hey, you. Who are you?
- Nemo: My name is Nemo. I work with the U.S. Navy. We just want to talk.
- Muse: I talk English.
I want 10 million dollars.
- Muse: It's not that easy but we'll work on it. In the meantime, what if I bring you some food and water?
- Muse: No tricks, or your captain dead.
- Muse: Everything good, Irish. Everything gonna be okay. I go Navy ship, get dollars, you go home. It was supposed to be easy. I take ship... ransom... nobody get hurt.
- Captain Phillips: You had thirty thousand dollars. And a way to Somalia. It wasn't enough?
- Muse: I got bosses. They got rules.

"Maybe in America, Irish, maybe in America."
- Captain Phillips: We all got bosses. There's got to be something other than being a fisherman or kidnapping people.
- Muse: Maybe in America, Irish, maybe in America.
- Captain Phillips: There's a reason your boss took off and isn't coming back. He didn't wanna take on the Navy. He's gone. He's left you alone. You had a plan to take my ship. That didn't work, so you thought you could take me?
- Muse: Shut up.

- Captain Phillips: Make a run to Somalia? They got the Navy out there. You gotta give up. You gotta stop.
- Muse: I can't stop now, Irish.
- Captain Phillips: The Navy is not gonna let you win. They can't let you win. They would rather sink this boat than let you get me Somalia.
- Muse: Last year I took a Greek ship. 6 million dollars.
- Captain Phillips: 6 million dollars? So what are you doing here?
- Muse: Shut up, Irish. Too much talking.
- Captain Phillips: The problem is not me talking. The problem is you not listening.
